Re: about flutes in (high) G...

Antique fourth flutes (G) do exist. I've seen ones by Firth and Pond, J. Haynes, and William Prowse. They are listed in some old flute catalogs. I believe Jem has one by Beckett??? Nowhere near as common as F (third) flutes, though. Tom Abei is making a G flute he calls a bass piccolo. He is doing ...

Re: Purchasing a D fife (in Europe)

They work for me - your embouchure, instrument, and breath pressure may vary, but of the two I gave the first gives a strong solid first octave C nat, whereas the second is slightly sharp but usable for passing notes in runs. 2nd octave I'd use the first fingering or half-cover the top hole, depend...

Re: Purchasing a D fife (in Europe)

a technical question:
is it possible to obtain a good Cnat on an aluminium Angus fife in D with this fingering:
OXXOOO
or a Bb on a C fife?

If it isn't possible, what's the best fingering for the Cnat/Bb?

Re: Purchasing a D fife (in Europe)

I recently got several one-piece aluminum fifes/flutes from Angus Fifes, including his smallest (Eb) and almost his largest (low D). They are strikingly easy to play, right in tune, and don't need breaking in. They are also quite loud compared to my other instruments, which might or might not be wh...

Re: Cork problem

I had the same problem one month ago, you have two options: - To make a new cork, but you have to be a bit skilled with knife and sandpaper. I suggest you not to use the cork of a wine bottle, but possibly to buy new unused corks. Here in Italy, forexample, I can buy, for less than 5 Euros, a packag...

Looks like one heckuva party  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5oX_0A4Dx8 Bob I read that they have this fifes and drums band since 1808, they started to play under the napoleonic (so french) influence. Also in other towns of the Northern Italy there are F&D bands, but they are more rece...

Re: Purchasing a D fife (in Europe)

Thanks an seanduine for the suggestion. I didn't know this festival. Just curious what type of music will you play? Do you want a fife mainly for upper two octave playing or would a piccolo suit better? Jem's PVC piccolos are excellent by the way and cheap. I've misplaced mine but I keep hoping it w...
