Re: Brass Low D's-what do you like?

I have a Kerry Pro Custom Brass Low D...I think, anyway. It's an aluminum head, a brass body, a seamless tuning slide like my Goldie F, a large E hole and a not-so-large stretch for the D hole. I think it sounds great, now that I cleaned it with acid and smoothed some of the rough machining. Before ...

Re: LIGHTNING FAST FINGERING

I guess my fingers are working today because I was able to play along with Kevin on Rathlin Island in the Lunasa video. But the only way I can manage it is to keep my fingers rather close to the holes, moving them as little as possible. Check out Kevin's finger movement. Huge deflection. Maybe that'...

Re: To thumbhole or not to thumbhole - that is the question!

I give weight to the opinions of seasoned players. If I'm told a thumbhole is a gimmick, I pay attention, since I may come to the same conclusion with time, and then I'm stuck with a gimmicky instrument. But I also need to remind myself that in music, I principally aim to please myself. Yes I enjoy ...

Re: To thumbhole or not to thumbhole - that is the question!

I gave this some thought recently. Against a C-natural thumbhole: You might grow uncomfortable cross-fingering other whistles. The thumbhole might not be in a natural position for you. Your thumb must now have the discipline to stay put, which adds tension to the grip. Who wants tape or tape residue...

Re: Inexpensive A whistle

Last Friday Jerry Freeman wrote in an email to me: "Key of A tweaked brass Generation = $44.50 The key of A whistlehead doesn't fit a Bb tube. The A tube is slightly wider bore and the tweaking scheme is also slightly different." I have one on the way, which should be helpful because a thi...

Should I learn piper's grip?

I usually play an open-holed Boehm silver flute, and I cover the holes with the pads of my fingers. I recently acquired my first low-D whistle, a Kerry Pro, and I do the same with it, covering the holes with the pads of my fingers. I'm struggling with piper's grip; it doesn't feel secure, quick, or ...

Re: microphone preferences

Some useful responses here, thanks! Sounds like a dynamic mic on a stand may be a better solution than I thought.

Brad Anderson whistles, eh? Too many options! I'm already resisting the urge to get a Goldie while I wait for my Oz Vambrace.

microphone preferences

I recently picked up a Clarke Sweetone and last night I played for a contra dance, which was lots of fun. I eagerly await my next whistle, an Oz Whistles Vambrace D, which I expect will be somewhat louder. The other musicians--playing concertina, fiddles, and rhythm guitar--could hear me well enough...
