Re: Delrin flute suggestions for 2024?

The Copley & Boegli delrin flute is my favourite travel waterproof flute too. The intonation is very good although the third octave sounds flat (not many people here go there I suppose) I need to play more with the adjustable head cork which I keep forgetting is adjustable. It's a shame Glen Le ...

Re: Dizi: a superb podcast

That might be useful then to help bring a flat flute up to pitch by adding a dimo, and it would still play flat when you want it to. I can't hear any tuning difference in this demo though, so it may be a very subtle effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP_FpIjVGR0&ab_channel=EasonMusicPteLtd...

Re: Superb podcast about the dizi

I think so...! The main feature of the dimo hole is that it is constant: with a low bass flute or a high pitch flute - the size does not vary since the membrane stretch - if it is too narrow - there is insufficient vibration and if it is too wide - then the membrane flops creating a sizzling bumble ...

Re: Superb podcast about the dizi

I've just found a podcast about the dizi which is well worth a listen: https://chinaplus.cri.cn/chinaplus/mychina/art-and-literature/1410/20190131/243501.html - the audio plays at the top of the page. A fascinating instrument with a great sound. Presumably the membrane could be built into other typ...

Re: weber octave mando

Had a Gallatin before. Beautiful instruments with a real finesse. Unfortunately it was a narrow 1 1/4 neck and had to let it go. https://www.mandolincafe.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&query=category&category=CBOM&results_format=headlines is your ...

Re: Wooden Boehm flutes

Dunno David. In concerts every audience member who happens to like or comment about the music we make, comments on how refreshing it is to hear a wooden flute over the common garden silver metal typewriter Boehm flute. As a wooden flute player, I feel the difference: the overtones reverberate and it...

Re: Is Bawu Flute Hard to Learn to Play?

Funny anecdote Geoffrey :) Is the bawu still 'broken'? There are 2 plugs inside it: the headjoint cork and also a cork at the footjoint. This controls the sounding length and the sound pressure for the reed to activate, otherwise it needs the valve reed replaced. They are simple instruments with not...

Re: Wooden Boehm flutes

Cyberknight - have you researched the Peter Worrell simple system flute tailored on the Rudall Carte 8 key simple system flute? http://www.peterworrell.co.uk/pwrc.htm It plays at modern pitch and the head joint can be swapped with any Boehm headjoint - a wooden Chris Abell flute headjoint and the si...

Re: Is Bawu Flute Hard to Learn to Play?

On to the hulusi gourd reed flute next Bobbie :)
This is the same sound as the bawu with 2 variable drones ..think of it like a mini bagpipe :)

Peter Worrell flute maker

His 8 key Rudall Rose version of the simple system flute with the Boehm headjoint compatibility makes it very unique. Love this solid flute without vintage pitch quirks and lots of grunt. Lovely to see Peter Worrell featured for his less well known one handed instruments listed on his site. He's the...

Re: Is Bawu Flute Hard to Learn to Play?

It's much easier Bobbie. There is no need for any embouchure technique in the bawu instrument - which is not a flute despite being flute shaped. The bawu is a single reed instrument - same style of reeds as harmonicas. Any minimum pressure will activate the reed so even a child can play it. It is a ...

Re: Baroque flute for beginner

I'd like to pick the brains of people here who know a bit about Baroque flutes (traversos). I was looking at Bernolin's resin traversos. Is there any reason not to start on an Hotteterre copy, rather than a GA Rottenburgh? The Hotteterre has a fuller lower octave and is more Baroquey than the GA Ro...

Re: String recommendations for Lever harp

Hi Katys, is yours a student Robyn version? It will probably not withstand the higher tensions of steel strings if it is. I also play on 34 lever although mine is tuned metal wire x 10; gut or silkgut x 12 then nylon for the highest strings. This is the correct schema for my strings oddly - which I ...

Re: breaking in new Lesouef flute

Hi Stephen - I can't remember the 'new' instructions to my Lesoeuf keyed flutes - it was long ago :) When I came back a year later, I asked if I should be playing for more than 30 minutes. Solen looked aghast and said that her flutes were designed to be played way more often than the softly softly o...

F/S Several unplayed instruments!

Hope this is okay to post - I have a few instruments I haven't had time to play: David Oddy Mandocello 25inch scale sitka spruce body - made by the late David Oddy. An Irishman bought it off me in January 2022 and then never showed up or paid for it. Excellent cosmetic and 100% working condition. Dr...
