Re: Casey Burns Flute

Life's too short to play flutes that aren't the flute you want to play. Make sure you have a robust case, that's how you keep a flute safest.

A quick look around Casey's website suggests that the flute was probably initially purchased for $700-$1000 depending on how many extras it has.

Re: Seeking Wooff NB D chanter

If you don't manage to find one of Geoff's, I can tell you that Sam Lawrence in Yorkshire (Hunter Pipes) made a great NBD chanter for me 😁

Re: Delrin Pratten

IIRC, I think Tom Doorley played a Seery flute on at least the first Danú album, which sounds like the definition of a professional instrument to me? But perhaps you have already managed to try one and have decided it's not for you!

Re: Checking for leaks

Given the symptoms you report, I'd be inclined to check the position of the cork in the headjoint. If that has shifted then you might very well get a weaker sound. The imperfect rule for positioning is that the distance from the middle of the embouchure hole to the end of the cork should be equal to...

Re: Whistle Giveaway

I don't want to start any arguments about time signatures, but I'll often use Planxty Irwin when this sort of tune is requested.

Since you think you've heard it with the swallowtail, perhaps the list of tune names and recordings on thesession.org might help? https://thesession.org/tunes/106/recordings

Re: Consulting the Geek Oracle: QR Code Pet Tags

So QR codes are actually just fancy barcodes. They are just a way to store text in the same way that the barcodes on things at the supermarket store a series of numbers. You don't even need an internet connection to read a QR code (although most of them will be encoded to take you to a website). Mos...

Re: Ginsberg B reed?

Not sure I can tag people on the forum, but Sam Lawrence made a great reed for my Ginsberg B chanter a couple of months ago. It's playing very nicely and his rates are very reasonable!

Re: Vocalizing Dance Music Rhythms

My whistle teacher growing up in Winnipeg has done a lot of work on this particular subject, and I haven't found a better version anywhere. The important thing is to find a 3 syllable word for jigs and a 4 syllable word for reels that has the emphasis on the second syllable. i.e. Jigs: Banana, Toron...

Re: UK Contents Insurance

Thanks for the advice, all. I'll send a message to DQ to see if he has a standard thing he does for people, and otherwise see if any of the UK "pluthiers" I know have provided anything to anyone previously.

UK Contents Insurance

I am in the process of renewing my home contents insurance and one of the requirements is that I have a current valuation (within the past 3 years) for my pipes. I have not been in the UK long, and am wondering how do others approach this? The pipes were made by David Quinn in the 1980s and I am the...

I know your quote from a Leonard Cohen song, Anthem. There is a crack, a crack in everything That’s how the light gets in. A wonderful folk trio, The Once, from Newfoundland, Canada do a great version of it on their debut album. There is a live video version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPN...
