Re: Another Rudall and Rose

Personally I love a silver barrel, or partial or whole plate on the embouchure. I find putting my lip on a piece of wood that someone has discolored and even rotted up from their saliva enzymes to be, well, less than ideal. Plus that way you know that the shape, at least on the surface, is unchanged...

Re: Opnions on best Sounding Delrin flutes

Totally off the C&F radar, but my Fabio Di Natale synthetic R&R is the cat's meow. Mine is voiced in a more baroque fashion, with smaller tone holes and a flexible nuanced sound, though I think his oval embouchure would be more interesting some. http://www.fabiodinatale.com/en/classici-08.ht...

Re: [eBay] Boehm and Mendler Original Wooden Flute

This flute has been on ebay for quite a long time. I have seen it in person too, and can vouch that it is indeed a very nice flute. If money grew on trees I would want it :) These flutes don't come up for sale in public in a regular manner, so there's no way to really make a comment on the price. Bo...

early flute to guitar/banjo history - Asa Hopkins and FH&P

Some of you, who are interested in the American/European history of the conical flute in the 19th century, may find this book interesting. http://www.amazon.com/Inventing-American-Guitar-Innovations-Contemporaries/dp/1458405761 I have been saying this for a while -- the flute does not exist in a vac...

Re: Metzler flute [spotted] on ebay

I actually thought that Metzler looks pretty fantastic. Those ivory rings are special and give a really nice effect. Not something you see everyday. Flutes like this deserve to be brought back. I wish I had the skills to do that kind of work myself.

Yes this is a simple matter that should [not] be tackled here in somebody's For Sale thread on a flute forum.

Re: Problems with Sam Murray. Need Contact Information

In the past, I have read certain highly-esteemed flutemaker's comments on the non-payment of players, and the comments of players on the shady tactics of some flutemakers, and every possibility in between. The buyer must always beware. EVERY person must always remember that by posting something on a...

Re: Hamilton & Monzani

I have played one of those ivory flutes before and thought it was fantastic. But then again I am more interested in the sweet classical sound, and I prefer a small embouchure. Jem, on that recording, do you know which pieces they play the Monzani/Hill on, and what's the other ivory flute? I'm just l...

Re: Original late Keyless Rudall prices?

Thanks Jem. Another nice thing about these "off-brand" flutes is that many of them are boxwood (with silver or ivory), which in a Rudall would cost you even an extra arm and a leg. And then you'd be left with nary a limb at all. Not all of them have a great scale and tuning, but some certa...

Re: Interesting Exhibition Rudall, Rose & Carte silver flute

Well there you have it... I did get a chance to play a Louis Lot "unobtanium flute" that David Shorey had restored, what a beauty that was! Sometimes when I get to talking about these things I can just go on forever :) ! I didn't play that flute that David had, but I have heard that it wa...

Re: Interesting Exhibition Rudall, Rose & Carte silver flute

This is a nice looking flute, as all of these are. However, the seller is completely wrong about most details. That is a standard 1851 system flute, not a Radcliff. Every single one of these flutes out there has the Exhibition prize engraving, boasting that they won the exhibition in that year. But ...

Re: Original late Keyless Rudall prices?

You know, lots of people made excellent flutes in the 19th century, not just Rudall. You can find a pretty magical sound in a circa 1830 one-key flute from England (like D'Almaine and Goulding for example) or America (Firth Hall and Pond and a whole related group of makers) that will make you very h...

Re: Hearing question

How about playing baroque flute, which is so much quieter than what you're probably playing on now? I have some custom molded earplugs, which are amazing, and have removable filters, so you can choose exactly how much sound gets in. Another interesting but more expensive option would be to get the &...

I have one really similar, but in ebonite. Still, the signed label is pretty cool!
