Re: Blue Tac or Better?

But be very careful when placing the blu-tack. I made my favorite whistle non-functional when I changed out the blu-tack, apparently was not gentle enough when tamping down the new blu-tack, and broke that tiny piece of plastic that separates that void from the rest of the windway. Lesson learned.

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.

Toothpaste... that's a new one for me.

I just use dish soap and/or waxed dental floss.

Re: Never trust a .....

Good sleuthing, Terry! Please tell us you didn't use a cucumber slice as a gap-filler. Why not? Sounds like he has plenty to spare! :D Terry: A LITTLE off topic... Peel and shred the cukes, add some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and garlic salt (maybe some salt and pepper). Trust me! Pat Tomatoes are...

Taladh Chriosda pronunciation (Scottish Gaelic)

Does anyone know of any pronunciation guides for this song on the web? (It's also known as Taladh ar Slanaigheir.) Preferably with audio, but I don't think I can afford to be picky. I know there's a guide for two or three verses on Youtube as a supplement to a setting done by Mark Sirett, but I'm ho...

Re: Bodhran?

There are "tweaks" to bodhrans to improve cheap ones, same as for whistles. The tape "trick" (I've always read it as 2" electrical tape-- get the Scotch Super 33, I believe it is) is one of them. I can't remember the others, now.

Re: Cleaning Whistles

I have interdental brushes to use on mine. Also dental floss, since a whistle mouthpiece is too long for the brush to get from one end of the windway to the other-- the kind that's kind of fluffy. (I just realized-- does this mean that when my dentist asks, I can say I DO floss??) For tarnish around...

Re: Stuck

I wonder if enlisting the help of Copeland might also be an option. I got the slide of my Impempe whistle stuck once (long story short: I'm dumb), and someone here suggested I send it back to Ian Turnbull for unsticking, which he did. Just an idea in case you're nervous doing too much to them yourse...

Re: The Wonders of Cheap Whistles

Honestly-- I've enjoyed the (brass) Walton whistles I own. I still mourn my first that died (well, the head did, so, same thing); it was my first whistle. It had a unique, sort of "reedy" tone that I'd love to find again (but without buying a boatload of them and playing them all and then ...

Re: A dramatic 6-year-old tries her hand at shoveling snow

I don't like nouns as verbs at all. See, for me they're playful. But it can't be done willy-nilly I feel like turning nouns into verbs in the U.S. is a thing done to be "cute," but then it's completely overdone. Say it once or twice, haha, somebody's using language in a novel way. But peo...

Re: Practicing/playing with different makers

I admit to WHOAD. (Hi, Katharine!) This because I was looking for my "holy grail" whistle. What I discovered after acquiring a couple others was that I preferred the Walton that was my first whistle plucked up at a Highland games. (I had a Freeman Mellow Dog D/C set but didn't prefer the s...

Re: Do you ever play in public spaces?

At church-- if we're talking about "playing deliberately in public as a performance." My practice of both whistle and recorder is usually in a local park because there's no way I can practice ethically in my apartment with the very thin walls (yeah, I could mute the whistle significantly, ...

Re: Irish wire strung harp

What is your reason for not wanting to play with your fingernails? My understanding of wire harp is that part of the reason the nails are used is because the strings are more closely spaced than a nylon/gut strung harp-- so using the nails is a bit of a necessity? I don't see why you couldn't use gu...

Re: C Whistle - Transpose or Not

I admit that while I understand the "instruments in C (or D) vs transposing" thing... I don't understand why some are transposing! Mind you, I get that someone once decided that "six fingers down is D," but not why this is always true. (Caveat: I've never played a transposing ins...

Re: Another compelling argument for a total ban.

My favorite viola joke is:

Why is a viola called 'bratsche' in German?
Because that's the sound it makes when you sit on it.

(Yes, I double on viola.)
