Re: Self Taught, Folk Players...Advice?
Overanalyzing is my forte :D Back to your original request and present limitations... Some suggestions - may repeat some you've alread heard: (1) Listen carefully to others. E.g. YouTube examples, what folks do in performances, what you see accomplished players doing in sessions and elsewhere. Liste...

Re: Newbie starting out...got me a German 19thc flute...help?
There's this standard, accepted story about Boehm flutes becoming the norm around the turn of the 20th century, and the pawn shops of England (and Ireland??) getting flooded with lovely Rudall and Pratten flutes, but I don't buy it. Micho Russell's recollections indicated that cheap, mail-order Germ...

Re: Identify an Irish flute
Jem, thank you so much for posting the "post tweak" clip.
It might be influenced by expectations on my part, but it seems smoother and probably slightly more responsive as a result.
Very nice work as seen in the photos!

Re: Identify an Irish flute
Jem, you're quite right. I am amazed. Really quite good aprart from the tuning around C. And all the way up to 3rd register G...surprising. Please do post another clip when you get it cleaned up and adjusted. I'm very curious to see whether there is a significant improvement. I'm also curious whethe...

Re: Which F key to choose (short or long) for new wooden flute.
They are nice to have but there are work arounds a and Nicholson being a virtuoso played much more difficult pieces than Julia Delaney. Oh yes, of course. My point was, I really cannot see how anyone, despite virtuosity, could play repeated and very rapid transitions betweeen D and Fnat with the sh...

Re: Le Violon Confesseur
[Thread revival. - Mod] Actually, the tune was written by the Quebec fiddler Éric Favreau. He is an amazing musician and I've had the pleasure of having him for an instructor several times at Maine Fiddle Camp. The way it is played is not quite correct in the Danse Ce Soir book. Éric plays it the A...

Re: Which F key to choose (short or long) for new wooden flute.
Really, there is no right answer based on what you've provided us. A good flute will serve you for a lifetime and you can pass it along to other lifetimes. I didn't know what keys I'd need when I started on wooden flute. So didn't know the answer myself. Tonight we previewed some waltzes for an upco...

...... And here you have them, lock, stock and barrel: http://www.quality1trader.co.uk . For the OP's info, I should say the example they asked about is of very recent vintage indeed, whatever its interim provenance. OMG...everything on offer there from rebabs to sporrans, from harps to helmets! Qu...

Re: What kind of microphone suits a flute well?
One other thing... Someone mentioned headset mics. I have and used to use regularly, for a year or two, an AKG C420. It's an option to consider. I still use it occasionally, like outdoor gigs. It has some of the instrument-switching benefits of standmount. There's no handling noises to deal with (ap...

Re: What kind of microphone suits a flute well?
per Gabriel: "I'm talking at least four-band semi-parametric EQs of course, anything less isn't really appropiate live gear IMHO...most venues we're playing these days have digital consoles anyway..." Lucky dude! Our local dance has a digital board (about the past 6 months), and there's on...

Re: What kind of microphone suits a flute well?
Chris Cracknell wrote: "I have and use the Microvox mic." I've heard good things about it, and have heard it used by a couple of wooden flute players at dances over the years. This is an omnidirectional mic, and the mounting system supplied apparently works well enough to eliminate most ha...

Re: What kind of microphone suits a flute well?
Hi Cameron - Mostly I play into a Shure SM81 condenser mic on a stand. I always bring my own stand because you can't rely on venues to have anything decent. This works better for me as I'm occasionally switching to F flute or sometimes others, plus various whistles. Also, it is easiest and cleanest ...

Re: Breaking the speed barrier
Has anyone put numbers to the fast session players? How fast do they play? An interesting question; but maybe more to the point, how fast do they play *well*? Playing as I do for dancers, with tempo defined by their needs and not those of musicians; and with a fiddler and piano guy who sometimes li...

Re: Breaking the speed barrier
You have to slow down and concentrate on the parts of a tune that you can't play fast. Don't play the whole tune, stumbling on the tricky part every time through. Isolate the difficult passage, make an exercise out of those notes, and play that passage as an exercise until you don't stumble on it a...

Re: Leaking?
Tenons? Cork or thread wrapped? If condition is in doubt, could wrap with a turn or two of Teflon tape. That might tell you something. You say second register is OK, only low register F#-D. From what I've seen, that's where you run into the most trouble if there's leakage *anywhere*. As was mentione...
