Re: Frequency in a square tube

My hunch is that a square tube would have a *slightly* lower pitch. How much lower, I do not know. Another hunch: the difference might be so small that fancy lab gear would be needed to measure it I think your hunches could be right. I made an uilleann "C" chanter with a square bore based...

Re: "Typical" Way of Playing?

When this thread started back in 2013 the talk was about playing the pipes standing up. A year or two after that I made me a "uilleann" chanter that I can play sitting, standing or walking about. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52444506410_c456b10469_w.jpg The bottom centimetre or two ...

Re: The Piper's Despair (D M Quinn)

Hi Red, I'm glad you've got a contact for the book. I've seen a copy and I think there's stuff in there that you won't find anywhere else. By the way, I hope you don't mind me sayin' but that sure is some "nom de plume" you've got there. I don't know whether to be impressed or downright sc...

Re: ISI Aceto Violin Neck Strap

Hi E=Fb. Welcome to the Forum. I haven't used the product in question although I have used a neck sling. The ISI Aceto looks nifty but my guess is that it might not suit everybody's setup. The idea seems to depend on the chin rest clamp being absolutely secure and I'm not sure I would trust mine. In...

Re: Ebay Items

Howard half set https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334490651303 ... SwyNtivyg9 Can anyone confirm if this is genuine? Headline information says item is in Sheffield, description says Bakewell, Derbyshire, which might suggest the description was cut and pasted from another listing. The Ebay address may be b...

Re: 5-string banjo players - Irish music

For something unusual, listen to "Irish Washerwoman" by Pete Roberts (Pete Kuykendall) on "American Banjo: 3 Finger & Scruggs Style". Its in the Library of Congress Folkways Catalog where you can buy an MP3 of it. Pete slows the jig down to waltz tempo while throwing in a ton...

Re: Regulator Key Shape

Thanks for the good advice Rory. But the pipes have ended up in water rather than fire. My old uncle Murdo McMurdoch phoned me the other day and while we were talking I had an idea. When we were kids we used to play down at his spread. There was a old mine shaft in the side of a hill. We weren't sup...

Re: Regulator Key Shape

An interesting story, Rory. It got me thinking. In fact it's got me worried. D'ye think other sets of pipes could be cursed? The thing is, I've got this old set of pipes. Had them for years. They've brought me nothing but bad luck. I can never get them in tune anyway. My friends and neighbors, espec...

Re: Contrabass regulators

In the first video the bass reg has a "normal" reed cap and the extra high reg is next to the tenor. In the second video the bass reg looks to be fed by the trombone thing and the high reg doesn't seem to be there but presumably it could be fitted into the other end of the trombone.

Re: Reedmaking and tone.

I recall talking about that haunting dark, broad, round, woody timbre Séamus Ennis’s chanter had when it was in his possession, Someone once told me that my particular chanter/reed combination at that time sounded "woody". I don't think it was meant as a compliment. My guess is that said ...

Re: Leo Rowsome's personal set

I don't think the A440 thing in 1939 was that much of a big bang moment for music (e.g. "OMG I've got got to start making bigger reeds NOW!") because A439 (not much difference) had already been around for a long time, as a rival "platform" if you like to the high pitch. And it to...

Re: Crowley set in G&H auction

I've seen a photo of a single-bladed oboe reed. It looked like a slimmed-down version of a clarinet mouth piece. Presumably it works.

Thanks for the information Glenarley. I'll be interested to see the results of your proposed UP drone research.
