Re: A New Instrument... the Pianoflute! (Anyone want to make it?)

I often wonder why there's no such thing as "fipple bagpipes." If attaching multiple reed instruments to a bag works so well, why not attach multiple fipple flutes to a bag? I bet that would sound cool. It's a matter of pressure and flow volume. Bags work well for high pressure (relativel...

Re: Frequency in a square tube

For all practical purposes, the resonant frequencies of a square pipe will be the same as a round pipe of the same length and similar cross sectional area.

Re: Wood Whistle Makers

On a tangential note, I kinda of want to build a machine learning ("AI") program that would make it easy to model how various shapes, materials, thicknesses, bores, flares, holes and all effect the pitch. Google "woodwind instrument designer". You'll find a Java application and ...

Re: Double hole whistles?

Morneaux's 10-hole design is really excellent. Except ... Granted, my Morneaux chromatic has a rather weak bell note. Maybe it isn't as easy as drilling a few extra holes. It has few drawbacks and a lot of benefits. We have disputed both of these claims from a number of perspectives. It isn't sinki...

Re: Double hole whistles?

I've never in my life seen a whistle player play in F major on a D whistle. Is it possible? Sure. But most whistle players (and owners of non-keyed flutes) simply sit out when one of those tunes come up. Or they pick up a C or F whistle from their roll, and carry merrily along, because ... Unlike m...

Re: Double hole whistles?

And I also don't really understand why people are so resistant to it. As I previously mentioned, there are NO downsides to adding a couple more holes. It doesn't make the instrument any harder to play - just more flexible. At the very least, it makes the instrument harder to make, or at least make ...

Re: Double hole whistles?

it's an excellent design idea. It really ought to be standard, in my opinion It's fine to get if you feel you need it, the overwhelming majority of whistle players get all they want or need from the standard six hole configuration and have no wish to turn the instrument into something else. :poke: ...

Re: 3d printed whistles, take 2?

I was interested to see the curved edge on the bottom of the ramp. I would have thought that not a good idea - that we would want the transit time across the window to be uniform across the window. But am I ignoring something or blowing it out of appropriate proportion? In my limited experience wit...

Re: Low D brass whistle

Can you give me the bore sizes in the Goldie and Grinter. I know they're low F rather than D, but I can still use that as a guide. I need to know how narrow I can go while maintaining a decent lowest note, and at this stage I'm not looking to maximise volume, though in any case, with the ability to...

Re: Any music-related app recommendations?

The Google Play Store tells me that Tunepal is written for Android 7.0 "and up" but doesn't work on my Android 12 phone. Newer phones are running Android 13 or 14, so David is probably out of luck as far as Tunepal is concerned. You might want to reinstall it. My Samsung is running Androi...

I'd be interested to know what you use the oscilloscope for. Can you wire it up to anything?
I don't use it much, and haven't used it for anything practical at all. It shows only what the microphone picks up.

I have these on my phone, although some of them don't get much use. For the Aussie-impaired, what's an op-shop?
Short for "opportunity shop," I'm going to guess. Around here, "thrift store" would be a more common term.
