Re: Changing keys on accordion

Thanks for this useful info.

I'll look around for a D box even though I hate to part with my Paolo Soprani.

Changing keys on accordion

Is it possible to change the keys by putting in new reeds only?
If I got the reeds for D/D sharp box for example plus the correct base reeds and put them in my C/G two row accordion would I then have a D/D sharp box?

Re: Best key is best to use in Irish music?

Sorry to chime in late on this. If the third button down on the squeeze is what you use as your D (fundamental or tonic) then I'm not at all sure I would be in a hurry to have the instrument converted to B/C. If it is a "third-button start" then it is likely not to be one of the highly pr...

Re: Best key is best to use in Irish music?

Well ... If you're playing for yourself only, and you play melodeon-style on a single row, then you can keep doing what you're doing. :-) You have access to all the modes relative to C (D Dorian, G Mixolydian, etc.) and can transpose tunes to one of those modes as needed. If you're playing with oth...

Re: Best key is best to use in Irish music?

Well, I found out that I have a C/G box. The inside row is in C. If I play on the inside row only would it ok for playing with other musicians at a session? My friend said a D box is what I really need because all the tunes I learned by note would have D as the third button on push in. That sounds r...

Re: Best key is best to use in Irish music?

[otherwise, just get a one-row. ceemonster, I have an old Cajun one-row that has had it's day but you're right, since I can only play on one row I think I'll get a good one-row. Do you have any suggestions as to what make would be good. I don't know if Paola Soprani made one row boxes. Would a c box...

Re: Best key is best to use in Irish music?

You need to determine for sure the actual notes that each row produces. If you can't do that by ear, you can use an electronic tuner.Quote

MTGuru,

I will try the online tuner and see what happens. Thanks for the info.

Re: Best key is best to use in Irish music?

Well Jim, the first thing you should do is ascertain what key your box really is in. To do this, open the bellows and grab a handful of buttons on any one row and push. You will get a major chord of the key that that particular row is in. The tonic will sound on the fourth button down from the chin...

Best key is best to use in Irish music?

I have a double row Paola Soprani accordion that I bought to learn how to play about six years ago. I believe it is a c/g key but I'm not absolutely sure. Anyway I've been told that for Irish music I should have a c box. I am limited to playing in c as I learn by note first and can only play on one ...

Re: Sheet music--where to find...

Thank you intrepidduckling---what a name--as bad as the killer penguin lol, I met someone who taught by note but lives too far away from me. I really don't think I could learn by ear judging by my years of listening to all kinds of songs, tunes, etc. and trying it. Given the opportunity I'd give it ...

Re: Sheet music--where to find...

I'm self taught, whatever that means, but I've been listening to ITM all my life. I only started learning to play the accordion a few years ago. Of the tunes I can play best I imitate the melody as I heard it played by professionals on tape or whatever, because that's what I hear in my head. Don't g...

Re: Sheet music--where to find...

Thanks to all who responded. This is great that I can get these notes. To give a perspective of where I am: I have to know the tune in my head before I get the notes and learn them but I have no place playing with "real" players. I could, at best, go up and play a few tunes by myself and h...

Sheet music--where to find...

Hi everyone, I just joined mainly to find out where on the internet I can find sheet music that I can print out. I play/teaching myself the button key accordion. I first have to learn by note and after enough practice can play without the notes. I have tried a few times to play at a session but can'...
