Some makers will offset holes to make the stretch easier (Walt Sweet comes to mind). I, too, though, have smaller hands with narrow fingers, but I'm fine with Copley and even slightly larger hole sized flutes. It definitely helps to hold a flute before buying, but that's often hard to do.

Re: Question for flute buskers
I've not had a problem being heard busking on my normal D flute, but I'm a rather loud player. I play my Delrin Copley (8 key, although I see he doesn't make 8 keyers anymore) on the street...totally get your point about the drop, knock and even weather changes that can impact a wooden flute on the ...

Re: Question for flute buskers
Hi Jim...I always busk using my D flute and also a high D whistle (just as a change of pace). I'm too lazy to buy a flute just to busk!

Re: Help me solve my flute hunt
So, apart from hole size and spacing, how any flute will sound will significantly be more about you than the flute itself. Don't get me wrong, the flute can and does make a difference, especially with regard to how you feel and enjoy playing it. But having owned an original Firth & Pond, an orig...

Re: Five-keyed flutes--long F natural key
While I use both F keys, I have tiny pinkies so the long F is more difficult for me to use quickly...it requires a lot of thought process but becomes more natural with practice on certain tunes.

Re: Can we be done with "Tri-City -County -State" areas?
Interestingly enough, we Kansas don't go down that quad or tri path very often...at least that I can think of. I can think of one bar in KC that's the Tri-City Tavern, and everyone I know has always thought Oh, my goodness! What in the world???? We have no clue what three cities they're talking abou...

I'm a big fan of my David O'Brien...but also feel it's too nice to toss in my pocket. Carey Parks walk about 3 part whistles are great for that purpose (definitely lighter, too, which is nice).

Re: Replacing cork under a key
You're gluing onto wood, so the same would work. I strongly suspect, and likely would just use, something like Elmers in that situation. It's not like it faces much twisting or any significant pressure.

Re: FS: Sam Murray 5-Key Blackwood Flute
I sold a 5 key Baubet flute that I had custom made by Francois and the buyer asked the same question...it's possible, like me, he didn't order it. I so rarely used the Cnat key I thought it wasn't worth the cost.

The groovy factor is a thing. I do tend to wear shades when outdoor at gigs, and those are some of my favorite pics.

All solid reason for needing and even liking them. I suspect I may be the only man standing on this topic...I know my wife thinks I am nuts.

Sunglasses...tool of Satan, necessary accessory or what?
I'm curious what people think of sunglasses. Needed to be outside or destroyer of true colors in the world?
Personally, I want to like them, but nothing looks like it does when you're not wearing them...all colors are wrong.
Thank you for listening to my rant.

Re: Which flute keys are the best keys?
I think it's mainly about what aesthetic you prefer when it comes to function. More Pratten flutes were later made and pin mounts are simpler than turned wooden mounts (which are the older paradigm and hence more rudall-esque). My block mounted keys on my Copley have low clearance. Whatever the make...
