Good working Five String Fiddle SOLD
This instrument started life as a German trade viola, then somewhere in Maine someone converted it to a five string. It doesn't have the nicest varnish, it is not the loudest fiddle - but I had used it most with a fishman transducer plugged in with bands & it did a great job for that. Great bar-...

Those things always looked like toys to me... Like the kind Sarah Jessica Parker would have in her nightstand.

Re: Source for good Bombarde Reeds?
If anyone can play bombarde, can you post the dimensions of your reeds? Can I use an oboe reed or a GHB reed? What do you suggest?

Sources for Icelandic flute music?
I have heard some recordings of Icelandic music that feature the flute, unfortunately the aesthetic in these recoding is washed out in new age arrangements. I've picked out some of the tunes and like them and was wondering if anybody knew a recording of some more traditional recordings? Other instru...

Re: Copper flute?
Also, a copper pipe flute is actually on the light side and aluminum corrodes too. Albeit very slowly for both - shaking and swabbing out the flute would prevent that anyway. As an aside, dense materials are favored for flutes, aluminum is considered porous in machinist/metalurgical circles. Orchest...

Re: Copper flute?
I made a flute from copper pipe a long time ago. It wasn't optimal, as mentioned the wall thickness was too thin and it had all sorts of tone and intonation issues. IME, Schedule 40 CPVC pipe will be the best "hardware store" flute material for a G or A pitched tooter. This site will help ...

Re: Why not mandocello?
The tunings DADA or DADG work well for mandocellos. Take inspiration from Alec Finns DAD bouzouki playing.

Re: When does a whistle become a recorder?
They are two different, but closely related, instruments. Outside of hole configurations, the two have a different tone, play differently and have different fingerings, it's due to the instruments design, recorders have thicker walls and narrower bores than a whistle. A tenor recorder won't cut the ...

Re: Clarke for $31.50... Um, what??
I had a similar experience about 6 years ago in Newport, RI: I had a gig and had left my whistle at home so I went to the local guitar dood/band instrument repair shop and they only had Clarke's in C for about $30. When the guy saw me hemming and hawing he told me, "All the pro's play C, I've n...

Re: Advice ebay
I frustratingly just had something similar happen to me with a set of smallpipes I won at a low price. There was questionable stuff from the get-go, no tracking number, weird excuses, lots of BS - short of the story is I never got my item but was refunded by the seller.

As soon as I typed that I thought the same thing, maybe too many wedgies as a kid drove me to play the flute in the first place!
