Re: Keyed Baubet Flute…

Today I tried the ' vibrato ' action on the key and they worked well. The G# pad did come loose from the key. So I re-seated It. Good that it was at home when it happened. Not a fault of the flute, rather lack of servicing on my part. It is the first time a pad came loose in over ten years since I r...

Re: Keyed Baubet Flute…

The keys work well for me. They are also nicely made, in the style (shape) of Rudall Rose keys as they were at a certain period, maybe around the 1860's. Silver. I will try using them in a rapid vibrato action and report back.

Re: Keyed Baubet Flute…

I brought my Baubet keyed delrin a few years back. At the time Francois was not stamping his name on them. Love it. I saw a comment recently rating theirs as 'loud' but not "a session conon". Not quite sure what they mean but I would say I've never felt any lack in my experience. More impo...

Re: whistle easier than flute when picking up tune on the fly

I'd just like to say for clarification. I am only talking about checking the pitch. Given I am playing the whistle I will get that straight away but not always for the flute.

Re: whistle easier than flute when picking up tune on the fly

Hi Eric, Pretty much the same number of years for both flute and whistle. 40 years or a little more on both. I wonder if if I should progress on my ability to play the flute quieter , keeping it in pitch. Regarding the louder instrument. For the whistle yes it does tend to stand out on second octave...

whistle easier than flute when picking up tune on the fly

Any suggestions. I find it easier to pick up a tune 'on the fly' using whistle. I think it is partly the 'fixed' tuning. It might also be a bit of the whistle not 'standing out' so much. I have seen some players who seem to able to do this fine on flute. Is it that they have a reference pitch in the...

Re: Comhaltas All Ireland Flute Competition Streamed Live

Yes also got it on the TnG4 player catch up in England. Great playing , so happy the the final player was able to get his flute sorted and then play. Lovely to be see it. Would anyone like to comment on the choice of tunes. Many of the tunes are ones that I can't recall having heard before no one's ...

Re: Paul Roche -style

I thought it was a Rudall and Rose. I would like to see that discussion , sorry I might be the only one who does not know, what is FHC , may I ask please?

Re: Paul Roche -style

I think one reason I posted is I find the style very refreshing. I don't mean to knock the styles that have, what would we say, stand out variations, super dexterity etc. I appreciate all that too when done with taste, as so many players can. I saw one post on a fiddle forum somewhere. They said tha...

Re: Paul Roche -style

Yes that fits better. A rounded tone rather than a slightly more harsh tone maybe. Something surprised me, while noodling for a similar tone on my flute. By aiming to the right of centre of the blow hole ( struggle to spell the French word) helps. The flute Paul Roche is playing is a slightly earlie...

Re: Paul Roche -style

I suppose the setting comes into play too. What instruments are playing, their volume, and especially the level of background noise. Also is flute amplified or not. In the right setting the fluter can consider tone and colour , but when the in-laws and outlaws are all out , no choice but give it sti...

Re: Paul Roche -style

It has been quite a while since I heard Roche up close but I don't remember his playing as 'softer' toned, there was quite a bit of power there, if I recall correctly. Not particularly huffy or honky but I m not sure I would go with 'softer' as a descriptor. I think I know what you are getting at t...

Re: Paul Roche -style

Nice to get some background and to learn the family relationship.
I love the 'straight forward' approach / phrasing.
I am experimenting at getting that slightly softer tone. Partly down to the earlier style of flute but should be able to get close on a later style too.

Paul Roche -style

Paul Roche (Stockton's wing). Very attracted to his style.

Love the 'close' playing here by the trio.

I used Audacity to slow it down to hear the nuances better.

Any comments please?
