Re: Drones lose Tuning

I second both previous suggestions. David Daye also has a youtube video showing how to pitch stabilize drone reeds I think this is the one (I did not watch it recently): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDhEXucstn8 In case this is not, then check out his other videos. He has some great stuff on the s...

Re: Back to basics: metronome

You can use a metronome to set the tempo. The rhythm in a tune is up to the player. There can be a lot of fluctuation even within a set tempo. This is true. An example is 'the Dusty Miller' set from Tommy Keane's 'Piper's Apron' album; where he switches from 9/8 to 12/8 and back again, finally fini...

Re: Back to basics: metronome

Yes metronomes are mongrel things! They all slow down in the easy bits and speed up in the tricky parts of a tune. Seriously though, I find that if I am playing a new tune or one that I have not played for a long time, and it is just not sounding right, that it is often a timing issue. The sim...

Re: Ringing Chanter Sound

greetings all,

a session I used to frequent some years ago had a long table with a
ceiling fan about 1/3 the way along.
It drove every piper or flute player that sat under it nuts when it was turning,
did not bother guitarists or bodhran players though.

Re: Tuning Eb on JI chanters

Off the top of my head I can think of some pipers using it in the low octave, both Ennis and Reck come to mind, in particular in the Derry hrnp I believe. Ennis also for variation in the Liverpool hrnp and others (I can probably come up with a few more specific examples if I think harder). Seamus E...

Re: Those reeds/worth a look

The free reed's bottom id is 1/8" (3.15mm). The other three bottom interior diameters measures about 7/64" (2.74mm), which seems a little small. all the uilleann reeds I received from latifsons are on copper staples ~3.9mm ID, ~4.75mm OD. they were cut with a wheel type pipe cutter which ...

Re: Those reeds/worth a look

After checking the pic. at link in the previous thread 'maybe Worth a look',
the reeds in the more expensive 5 for AU$37.15 look closer than the cheaper 6 for AU$23.19.

I think I will try the more expensive option.

cheers.

Re: Those reeds/worth a look

I might give those a try as well.

They might not work as well here in Melbourne though, most reeds don't, but they are cheap.

I notice they have lots of 6, and lots of 5 which are more expensive.
Was it the cheaper 6 reed lot you referred to in the original post?

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)

Thanks Larry for the update on your spruce reeds, it is encouraging to hear about your success, especially the comparison with cane reeds. I wonder what the best spacing is for growth rings on a slip... With the spruce I used (came from packing crates - some looks a lot like the stuff in Lorenzo's p...

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)

I have not finished one yet, but I have sanded a few slips down to size. I have been cutting two blade length pieces (~60mm long) from a double thickness (6-7mm) piece using a japanese pull saw (kerf 0.8mm), across the growth rings. gives pieces 2.5 - 3.0mm thick. gives me the best chance of balanci...

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)

I managed to buy these about a week or so after my last post: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/64b-3-x-USA-CURLY-BIG-LEAF-MAPLE-WOOD-TURNING-CRAFTS-30-DAYS-TO-PAY-/251867725489?_trkparms=ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140723144413%26meid%3Dd207cb00a2f940bd8f3843c6e29d75e4%26pid%3D100275%26&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&am...

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)

Thanks Lorenzo, for posting the pic of the curly maple reed and the description of how it sounds. I was impressed the sound of the Froment chanter in the jig clip on the thread linked in my last post. I assume that was a Brazenkane maple reed. I was probably getting ahead of myself though. Better to...

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)

That brightened it considerably! #SimplyAmazed great stuff! Don't bother untying it now, you won't get a lot of improvement. maybe in a year or two if it gets dull again, or when you have two better reeds. If you want more improvement try Geoff's suggestion. Try the wetting trick with the 1500 grit...

Re: Reed Adjustment

I had a bag like Caspermilktoast describes.
The leather had dried out, and was leaking through the pores, no visible holes.

Tried my chanter on someone else's bag and couldn't believe the difference!

Re: Spruce Chanter Reed (demo)

larry, I would try Geoff's method first. (and thanks for the tip Geoff.) Easier, and less chance of making things worse. I got the idea from one of David Daye's articles, can't remember which. There are lots of good articles and videos at his site. Click on the support & tips link on the sidebar...
