Lessons?
I've been playing one of Doug Tipple's flutes for several years, and I am managing to do OK for my needs without a teacher so far. My problem about teachers is distance: a trip to the nearest teacher is about a 90 mile round trip. Would getting a teacher help me with timing, phrasing, ornamentation,...

Re: How to tweak a Clarke ...
What tool can I use to straighten the sound blade? It's in an awkward position as it is without removing the wooden plug to get some moe room, I think. Of course, I'm probably going about it all wrong, but I could use some pointers.

Freeman Tweaked A whistle update
I can now play it without too many squeaks and hoots. It's taken about a month or more to get used to the finger spread and blowing requirements, and if I go back to a D whistle, I just about have to start all over again. But it's a fun whistle none the less. Just in case anyone was interested. With...

Reach on a Tipple vs a Pratten?
I have one of Doug Tipple's flutes and I've pretty well gotten used to the finger spread. I am curious, though, if I were to order a Pratten-style flute, how would the finger spread compare to my flute: greater spread, lesser spread, somewhere in-between? Thank you to all who reply. To line or not to line?
I'm saving up to get a Casey Burns Standard flute in boxwood. What advantages, if any, are there in having the head joint lined? I'm very careful with my instruments, if that would make any difference.

Got a Jerry Freeman Tweaked Generation in A
It's a whole other instrument. I am having to relearn how to cover the holes and how little air it needs (at least to me) to make a halfway reasonable sound. I have slowed down considerably just to be able to get a sound out of it that's close to what I think it should be. I'm not sure if this whist...

My mistake on the description of the problem. I'm working hard on getting a good seal on all of the holes. Some are easier than others...

Re: Got a Generation brass Bb
What do I mean by intonation? It squeaks and some of the notes (the bottom Bb especially) sound thin unless I hit the hole exactly so with my finger. I have already gotten some good (to my ear) sounds out of it in the short time I've played it, so I have hopes that it will settle down. With best reg...

Got a Generation brass Bb
I just got it in the mail from The Whistle Shop. I like the tone; I'm having to adjust my technique (such as it is) for playing it, as it takes a different approach from the D and C Clarke Originals. There are some faults in the intonation and some of the notes are wonky as I play, but I think I wil...

Keys other than high D for playing by myself?
I'm thinking about buying a lower-pitched whistle for playing by myself. I have a Clarke C which is what I started whistle with, and I really like the lower pitch; it's more soothing than the D model. I have been playing a D whistle for years, on the off-chance that I'll find a session that's conven...

Re: I can't seem to learn tunes by sheet music..
I play Highland pipes, and i use the sheet music to help me learn an unfamiliar tune, backed up by hearing the tune many, many times. I've been playing pipes for 25+ years, and I'm a pretty good street band piper. I play all of the instruments mentioned for my own amusement (Sometimes I'm the only o...

I can't seem to learn tunes by sheet music..
...I have to hear it to be able to play it! I can read sheet music for my pipes and guitar but not for my whistle. How odd is that?! I've tried and tried to use written music to learn whistle tunes but it just won't work for me. So I suppose I will need to start laying in a real collection o...

Re: Cork grease — why?
And some of us Highland pipers use toilet bowl wax to grease tenons and hemp. A single ring of the stuff lasts halfway to forever.
