John Leyden was a Scottish orientalist/folklorist/antiquarian (1775-1811). Among other things he was involved with Walter Scott in collecting border music.
I'm planning to write up my findings in Common Stock the LBPS journal, but it could be a while....time, work, kids, other things to do etc etc.

Re: CEOL 1969 and MAIRSEAIL ALASDRUIM
thanks guys! Some great leads there. I knew I could rely on C&F! I'm researching the "so-called-border-pibroch", a type of music analogous to GHB Piobaireachd that Leyden (c.1801) said was once played in the Anglo-Scots border country. What I realized early on is that not only did such...

CEOL 1969 and MAIRSEAIL ALASDRUIM
Hi chaps wondering if any kind soul out there has a copy of CEOL Vols 2 & 3, 1969 or a web link to a copy. I tried google but no luck. If you do have a copy I'm after a photocopy of an (alleged) article on/musical transcription of, Micky Chumba O'Sullivans cylinder recording of Alisdrum's March....

Re: MICHAEL KEENAN OF SHERCOCK, 1895-1979
that's a great link Kevin - many thanks. I had a copy of the mini-obit but that source stated it was from Treoir 1979...I see now it was 1978. And the full obituary is brilliant, fills in a lot of gaps.

Re: MICHAEL KEENAN OF SHERCOCK, 1895-1979
Joe, add me to the list of those who'd love to hear your tape of Michael's playing! It's sad he seems so forgotten - in his time he was clearly well known and respected as both piper and maker. This is his obituaryfrom Treoir 1979 Michael 0 Cianain of Glassleck, ShercocK Co. Cavan, who has died, age...

Re: MICHAEL KEENAN OF SHERCOCK, 1895-1979
Thanks guys, this is great, please keep it coming! I play Border Pipes myself so I am particularly interested in Michael’s “Scotch Lowland Pipe” (one of the of many names for my instrument). That he was making this instrument and using this name in 1966 (and almost certainly earlier) is actually ver...

MICHAEL KEENAN OF SHERCOCK, 1895-1979
I am writing a small piece on piper and pipe maker, Michael Keenan (he prefered Miceal O Cianain) of Glasleac, Shercock, Co Cavan….lived 1895-1979. Though now almost totally forgotten, it seems that in his time he was quite a well known piper (UP and IWP) in Ireland, and an active member of both CCE...

SAVAGE & HOY CASES
I see that several pipers round here have (or have had) Savage and Hoy cases. I'm interested to know if anyone here has had any experience with Savage & Hoy in the last few years, since it was taken over by Graham Spencer?

Re: Pastoral Pipes.
The origin of the pastoral pipes is something I have been mulling over in my head for years. For what its worth, this is pretty much the scenario inside my head as of this moment - and sorry, I really don't have time to lay out all the evidence, you'll have to wait for me to write this up in one of ...

Re: Lincolnshire Pipes?
There are several references to "Lincolnshire bagpipe" in 16th and 17th century sources. As bagpipes were still widely played throughout England at this time and were not usually given any specific regional identity, it does seem reasonable to assume there was some sort of special bagpipe ...
