Re: the perils of reedmaking
Well, it's no emergency room trip, but I've been having wrist and arm pain since my reedmaking foray...to the extent that I haven't really been able to play any of my instruments for a week and half  . This is wholly unacceptable, as I'm heading for Ireland in just 4 days (and I would rea...

Re: When do you practice music?
I work from home, my wife doesn't, and she's been overdosed on ITM more or less since I started playing it. So, I typically practice for a while as soon as she leaves in the morning, then a bit again at lunch, and in small 2 to 15 minute doses throughout the day, depending on what's going on.

Re: the perils of reedmaking
Hmmm, I just got a couple of sheets with the kit that CJ Dixon sent, and the coarser was 150, or somewhere in that range. I've got a Home Depot right across the street, so I'll go pick up a wider range (particularly coarser) before I delve further into this arcane art. I'll pick any relevant brains ...

Re: the perils of reedmaking
Woot! I ended up losing some of the corners while sanding the scrape, so thought I'd ruined it (I'm working with a CJ Dixon chanter and reed kit...his reeds/instructions dictate pointy corners at the head/scrape end). But, I also have a Daye chanter/reed, and I noticed that his corners have a bit of...

Re: the perils of reedmaking
Sorry to be anticlimactic...if it does degenerate to the point of bleeding, I'll be sure to take pictures  I think I did just cut the slip far too wide...first time through, I'm trying to leave plenty of wiggle room. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to make more progress on this tonight. However, ...

the perils of reedmaking
So, given that the pipes haven't frustrated me into setting fire within the first 8 months, I decided to try making some reeds...perhaps to eventually keep myself stocked, but at the least to know how to tweak the reeds I have with some competence. I'm only to the point of sanding the slip, which I'...

Re: digital distribution and ITM
Yes, it can be a pain regarding contracts (at least for existing CDs), if the contracts did not previously make provision for electronic distribution. Also a headache for sound recordings royalties and mechanical licenses, as it's easier to keep track on the number of CDs manufactured or sold. Beco...

Re: digital distribution and ITM
...the impression from those who gave it a go is that it's a lot hassle with little reward. At the risk of sounding like a hackneyed journalist, the music industry is still changing pretty wildly. When I released an album in 2006, I sold more CDs than individual song downloads. In 2010 and 2011, I'...

digital distribution and ITM
I've been selling my own music online for about 5 years (unrelated genre of music...very New Agey, most of you wouldn't be interested). It was easy to set up 5 years ago, the initial cash outlay is cheap (in the vicinity of US$50 per album), about 70%-80% of the sales prices makes it back to me (as ...

4. Will you be performing any time soon? If yes, what/where/why? -Yeah! Funny story. I found a website that gives you assignments to do in order to develop yourself in a particular "class" in the style of old Dungeons and Dragons classes if you're familar. The premise is simply to get you...

Re: Quarterly Reports are due again Newbies, Lurkers, & Others
About a year and a half into my ITM adventure, working primarily on flute and pipes (with bits of whistle and English concertina on the side)... 1) Working on learning more reels, since my current stock of tunes leans heavily toward jigs. Shifting toward learning by ear remains my constant challenge...

Re: Ethnicwind Whistles
And to yourself. I picked up one of his in A at the North Texas Irish Festival a couple of weeks ago. I haven't spent much time with it yet, but I've attempted to put it through it's paces. It's a little on the quiet side, and a little closer to the "pure" than the "chiffy" end o...

Re: First time out!
I've been finding that playing with better players causes me to improve, but for a different reason...I want to be able to participate without dragging them down, so I end up working that much harder on my own. Of course, they do serve as specific examples of what I should be working toward at home,...
