Re: Tuning Slide - Teflon Tape v. Cellophane Tape

That's fair enough about playing with instruments that are out of tune, though that's very unusual these days, depending on where you live I suppose. But if you want to nitpick that what you're actually saying is you need a tuning slide if you need to play out of tune at a session.

Re: Tuning Slide - Teflon Tape v. Cellophane Tape

I agree with Paul above, definitely Teflon tape for alloy whistles. I don't know why you'd try anything else. Wrap the tape on tightly and neatly and if you wind it on clockwise then twist the head on clockwise, as Paul describes. If it's bunching then it's too tight. Unless you're playing in extrem...

Re: A recorder for folk musik

It's perfectly possible to play semi tones on a whistle and certainly for almost all the music you'll encounter in Irish music a whistle is ideal. For some reason the tone of a recorder doesn't seem to sit well in Irish/Scottish trad, which is the reason you almost never see it played, but each to t...

Re: Low A whistle suggestions

Second Goldie. Fantastic tuning, tone and flexibility. Most decent whistles can be played in tune, tone is down to taste but their flexibility is what sets them above all other whistles in my personal opinion.

Re: Second, third whistle and so on

Like others have said it really depends on the song key, but I would add that the key of the song is not always the best key for the whistle. It's varies from song to song depending on the range. Personally I think you're, more often than not, better to have the root note of the song about half way ...

Re: Scottish fluters

I would say the better Scottish flute players play in the style of the folk they're playing with, or the session/gig they're playing in, at the time. Pretty much as players on most other instruments do. Usually they'll play in a pointed Scottish style in some situations, an Irish style or Scottish e...

Re: Mic set up for Border Pipes??

Ideally a swan neck condenser and a microphone mute pedal. I use a DPA4099 thought there are cheaper alternatives like AKG and Seinheiser. Why would you want to use it with a radio pack though? That makes no sense for Border pipes.

Re: Am I out of tune? ;)

The problem with this type of discussion, where we only hear the story of the aggrieved, is that we would have had to have been there. You end up with, in this case, the senior player being called a bully etc. We don't know if the tuning had being doing his head in for weeks, if he was asked by othe...

Re: Low whistle cleaning

I use strips of old credit cards or room keys that I cut to slightly narrower than the windway. You can shave/sand them down for narrower windways too. Remember to check the bottom of the fipple is clean too.

Re: Is this a low whistle being played through a wah wah ped

I think it's worth bearing in mind reverb was very fashionable in the 80's and 90's, not just in folk music. It's easy to criticise out of context. He played at the Gordon Duncan concert in Glasgow in January without the big reverb and he was excellent.
