Mic for whistle on stage
Is there a “best” mic for whistles on stage? I play low d more than high. In the past I’ve used my SM81 with a cheap compressor. I also have an sm57 and an Akg c414. The 81 seems to work and has a flat response. I have to practice with it to keep too much wind out of the mic.

Re: Any recording tricks for flutes and other wind instrumen
The better the room sounds the further away you can put the microphone, if that's the sound you want. If the room sounds bad then you'll want to be fairly close to it. If you have a set of closed back headphones (highly recommended) then you can easily walk around and try different positions and hea...

Re: Low C
I think the reason why cross-fingering works better on low whistles is not that they are low whistles but because they have a thicker wall. A deeper chimney for the sound holes has the effect that a finger below an open hole has a bigger influence in lowering the note. Those cross-fingerings should...

Re: Low C
I ended up buying a Kakapo low C. They're made in New Zeland and sold on Etsy. It was $50 delivered for the tunable model. For the price it's really nice. The fingering chart interestingly includes F# xxoxxx and G# xoxxxo (that would be G# and A# in D whistle nomenclature). They're more airy, but co...

Re: Two Questions
2. Refresh my memory on tonguing two or more notes of the same tone (D, D for instance). Do you tongue both D's or just the D or D's after the initial D? It depends on the context. I use double-tonguing in the 2nd part of Harvest Home. I don't tongue the first note of each three. I'd probably only ...

I have a Generation I bought in about 1990. It plays fine.
I have a whistle that my Great Grandfather played. He fought in the Boer War. No plastic on it

Re: Morrison's Jig on Smallpipes
You might want to pick up tin whistle to use on tunes that just don't work the the SSP. One tune that does work is Silver Spear. Terry Tully did an arrangement in one of his books. It's neat because in the 2nd part there's a bit that goes off the top end of the pipe, but what he wrote sounds good on...

Re: Tweaking a non-tunable all-metal whistle
You can use a tubing cutter to shorten it until the bell note is a G#, but then all the holes will be flat. If you measure the body and the distance from the slot to the hole you can estimate how much you'd need to move the holes to get them back in tune. It might be possible to drill entirely new h...

Re: Camping for Catskills
I'm not certain what the Catskills week is, but here are some observations from my own experiences. I've gone to a week long workshop where I camped a few miles away. It would have been more fun if I were at the site. I like to have a drink or two and stay up late with others, and being at a distant...

Re: Do whistles wear out?
Those old whistles often sound sweet. And you've got some history to go with! What's the significance of the huge orange ribbon? When my Dad had the whistle he used it as a decoration in the house since he didn't play. My Great Grandfather was a protestant Irishman, so orange ribbon. Several years ...

Re: Do whistles wear out?
I have my great-grandfather's whistle. He fought in the Boer War so the whistle is probably late 19th c.
I still play it.
I'm really hating photobucket, but there's a photo of it there:

Re: generation bb
Hi, I bought a Generation bb whistle. I like it a lot, nice and mellow sound! Only question is, is it common that the oxxooo note (maybe a or g#) is quite weak? The air doesnt flow from that note properly.. Maybe I got a bad one? Otherwise its very good.. Thanks! You might try different fingerings....

Re: Whistle Tunes from Other Traditions Beyond ITM?
That Bach is pretty amazing.
I've recently started writing whistle parts to accompany a friend's original guitar compositions. That's completely different from playing tunes.

Re: Is the term "Anasazi" correct and/or offensive?
Altogether, the language seems quite limiting. I'm going to call them Anasazi until somebody invents a better term. But I'll know what people mean when they call them Ancestral Puebloan. The Native American Park Ranger who guided our tour of Mesa Verde used the term anasazi to describe the people w...
