Re: Another R&R ready for the session!

Looks beautiful, Jon. Question: why is it that you and other restaurers so often replace the head of these antique flutes? Is it to correct tuning to modern standards, or for the wear on the tuning slide or something similar? Can't be for the crack I guess, cause you've repaired that nicely.

So that's what it is on my Frenchie! Pretty decent, that. Knew it existed but didn't know that it was like that. I'll have to experiment with this finish some day.

Re: Pipes, fabrication standards

Oh, right, I get it now. I should have guessed it from the given size alone, but I'm not so good with fractions of inches. Never mind!

Re: Pipes, fabrication standards

Thank-you for asking a question that I didn't really dare to ask, because I don't know much about piping yet. But since we're here now, allow me to elaborate a little on the original question: So OK, the size of the bag opening for the chanter stock is about 3/8". Next, is there any common size...

Re: Ye ultimate parlor pipe project

Well, first class of the new season, and I got a quote on my proposed project: a laugh and "more than one year"... And that's for the simple variant of the musette, not featuring the petit chalumeau. Still I guess each step could yield an interesting result in itself, so we'll see. (I firs...

Re: D foot vs C foot

I'm having a proper job pointing back to my older thread: http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=82445 Good to see that it was a useful question ;-) So with relation to your question: a C foot allows a maker to stick closer to a successful, classic design with little end-flare rela...

Re: Traversos in Irish Sessions

I have been known to screw up a demo performance on a practice weekend due to the F# not being quite there on my flute, but then again, I probably also missed a lot of other notes, too...

Re: The result of my flute project

I'll grant you that the exterior design is a bit crude. There are a few reasons, like that I wanted to ensure that the brittle wood is thick enough on critical places (form follows function), and that I wanted to keep the sections close to the original R&R, including an indicator line for where ...

The result of my flute project

Hi folks, I've been meaning to give you a final report on my flute project. You might recall it either from my questions posted here or from the link in my signature. It has gradually come to a point worth reporting on. I would call it "finished", were it not that I'd like to re-do the rig...

Re: Ye ultimate parlor pipe project

After some thinking, I guess I have part of my path already laid out for me: Since I want to play quietly, I'll probably have to go conical *) Since I want to accompany a G/C button accordion, I have to support the common scale (plus some accidentals perhaps) With that sorted out, it still leaves a ...

Re: sharp middle D, flat low D

Of course I don't know what kind of flute you have, but on my homemade flute I have the same problem. It is a D foot model. (So no extra unfigered / keyed holes below the bottom D.) After inquiry on this forum, it turned out that this design requires a much greater bore flare than I had expected fro...

Here's the link to his website, which also shows the older Musettes (a la Praetorius / Mersenne).

(Off topic: it feels funny that I try to avoid real-life names in my posts. I guess I'm of the earlier Internet generation :-) Then again, people collect enough information on you these days.)

Re: Ye ultimate parlor pipe project

You have a point there :-) He's officially retired and vowed never to make one of those wretched instruments again :-) So I want to do this in portions I can handle. If I'm going for the full thing at once, I'll have to lean on his knowledge waaay too much; I won't finish it, and he won't be amused ...
