Jim, Check out this website: http://www.pan-pipes.com/Bamboo_Whistles.htm I haven't ordered anything from them yet, but the prices seem reasonable. I think the Indian cane whistles are usually about $7-8. My first wooden flute was one of the Indian $8 jobs (from http://www.mid-east.com/), and it was...

I just wanted to add my voice of approval to Busman Whistle Review. I received the most beautiful whistle I've ever seen in Kingwood with brass fittings, and the voice is pure, sweet and strong. It's front and center on my whistle & flute rack, and I can't wait to play it when I get home from sc...

Well, I can't comment on the state of the Di-Zi in China, but it's alive and well on the Internet. Check this out: http://www.2measures.com/index.html I know the future of Irish music was pretty bleak once, too. Let's hope this tradition finds its feet again (I believe Kevin's WorldTrad.org is linke...

Jon, Though I no longer live in the Evergreen State, I've gone many times to the Folk Life Festival and highly recommend it! I especially enjoyed checking out the musical instrument vendors - the Lark in the Morning booth alone was worth the pushing through thousands of "tourists" (I was a...

To those in the know, What kind of design does Cotter use: a large hole/Pratten-style, a smaller hole R&R, or something of his own design? Are the finger holes all on one section (a la Pratten), or can the right and left hand holes be turned independantly? Thanks in advance for your answer! -Bob...

Caryn, It's all about nurturing and rebirth, and that can apply very appropriately to one's favorite artform - say, making beautiful music! It can be something simple as picking a favorite tune and making it a blessing for all the music you will get to make in the coming year, as well as nurturing y...

"Coinnleach Glas an Fhomhair", especially as sung by Maire Ni Bhraonain on Clannad's Magical Ring CD. It's not sad, but so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes. I haven't been able to make it sing on high or low whistle, but I'm getting closer with my M&E R&R flute. For sad (but s...

James,

I was getting worried there for a while! Us wooden-fluters would be lost without you! I haven't heard from the mailing list in a while. Should I e-mail in a topic to get the ball rolling again?

To those of you recommending recording on the computer, what kind of microphone do you use, and where can they be purchased (and for how much)?

Thanks!

I must echo Chris' comment that the Olwell bamboo flutes are not just a bargain, but fine instruments in their own right. You definately won't go wroung ordering one and Patrick is a fine person to deal with. As a beginner myself, it took some practice to hit it just right, but when you do, you're p...

I was going through the "Low Whistle Book" I got for Christmas, and there's a picture of Jon Swayne's whistles including a beautiful low D. According to the C&F entry, the Low D's are almost $500.00! That's Copeland price ranges, but they look well made with tuning slides. Has anybody ...

Hi folks!

The recent M & E R & R design has beginners like me wondering what's the difference in playability and tone between the Rudall & Rose and the Pratten design? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you both for the tips, it really made a big difference. Today I got a good solid bottom D out of it, and the rest of the range is more consistant now. This forum is awesome!

Now we'll see how I fare when my Olwell bamboo D arrives...

Hi all! I just got a Hall Crystal (Pyrex glass, actually) flute in Low D and have had trouble getting a consistant tone in the lowest three notes. I'm fairly new to the flute, after playing whistle and recoder for several years. I have the Tony Dixon Low D Flute/Whisle Duo and a surprisingly good an...
