Flute Weights Sticky

The topic of flute weights comes up repeatedly, and it can be an important factor to consider for those who have hand/arm/shoulder issues. Also, some people just prefer lighter, or possibly heavier, flutes. Unfortunately most makers generally don’t list the weight of their instruments on their websi...

Re: approximate value of a Laughing Whistle?

Noah made at least 2 types of whistles: Telescoping and the more standard type. I assume you’re talking about the telescoping version? Key of D?

Re: Double hole whistles?

I don't know, some people enjoy having a toolbox full of items, some people enjoy carrying a swiss army knife. Courses for horses. That's what's made me giggle about the whole thing. People with chromatic whistles would still end up with half a drawerful of them, just like people with whistles in d...

I find that the people who are making points that I understand and agree with are communicating more clearly at each attempt.
Agreed.

It only takes one party to create a……communication breakdown…(Sing it Robert!)

Re: Wood Whistle Makers

A tapered bore will cause the octave jump sooner than a “similar” bore size cylindrical instrument, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the low notes on a tapered bore will be low volume. Anyone who’s played a few Copeland whistles can attest to this, you simply have less leeway after reaching max vol...

Re: Wood Whistle Makers

My Morneaux is quite nice, and not just because it has the extra holes and can play chromatically. It also is extremely in-tune and has a lovely sound (though some might find it slightly recorder-esque due to its curved windway). This is incorrect: A curved windway does not impart a “recorder-esque...

Re: Double hole whistles?

PS: About whistle being "easy," I used to teach skiing, and we had a saying about it: "easy to learn and hard to master." Give me an hour and I'll get you making basic turns down a bunny slope. It's honestly not that hard! But if you want to be the next Bode Miller? Well, that's...

Re: Double hole whistles?

So when someone asks "why play a whistle?" (which is clearly very well suited to ITM in its 6 hole form) in response to a claim that it is not well suited to the poster's purpose without modification, that isn't necessarily intended as a slight or insult at all. It is just the obvious que...

Re: Double hole whistles?

Some people simply lack the time or the energy to master the instrument to such a professional degree as to play perfect D#. Others spend maddening hours repeating same motions till they get it right. Both of them have a right to have fun. The whistle is already about the easiest instrument...

Re: Double hole whistles?

And I also don't really understand why people are so resistant to it. As I previously mentioned, there are NO downsides to adding a couple more holes. It doesn't make the instrument any harder to play - just more flexible. At the very least, it makes the instrument harder to make, or at least make ...

FS: Bryan Byrne Keyless Blackwood Flute

Bryan Byrne keyless blackwood flute for sale. This is a very nice Rudall style flute with medium/small size finger holes. This flute reminds me of the good early Grinters in terms of response, tone, and volume - an excellent flute! I’d describe the tone as complex and focused, with a very sweet soun...
