Who learns how?
Just a quick survey of who learns how. I can't really learn by ear, it takes me way too long to be able to pick out the notes. What I usually do is listen to the tune, play 6 or 7 notes, and then transcribe them after I play them. By the time I get to the end of the tune, it's pretty much locked in....

I'm interested in John Landell's use of titanium for the same reasons you mention. I asked him about making a titanium alto flute (not that I have $20K lying around for what I'm sure it would cost), but he said that it's too difficult of a material to work with to warrant such an undertaking. Proba...

profile and tonehole approach. When I can get enough playing time on it to not sound like total chud I might even post a clip. (!) What's a chud? The only chud I'm familiar with was a bad 80's flick (Cannabalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers). I really hope that isn't it...  :...

Re: Really cool tunes....
Does anyone out there know of some really good tunes? I know it's a dumb and subjective question, so here are some qualifiers. I'm looking for reels/ hornpipes, things like that in the keys of D or G, or something fun that only uses 1-2 keys. For instance the tune that Seamus Egan plays on his flut...

Anybody playing a Grinter professionally is almost surely playing an 8-key. I believe that includes Kevin Crawford Mike McGoldrick. By the way, the low keys on the Grinter are very very good, I think I've said this. John Skelton is playing a 6-key Olwell--as mentioned earlier, there isn't an 8-key ...

secret for me with the low Cnat seems to have been a combination of 1) a sense of breathing out from the belly, not the mouth, and 2) headjoint position. When I had a Meyer 8 (Actually 11 key) flute, I found the imagery for the low notes to be more like blowing a note from a beer bottle than anythi...

exactly...sounds like the indexes need to be rebuilt flutes :-? bit late to attempt that :o I'd be surprised if it's the indices, actually. I'd think it's more the size of the database. This board is running phpBB 2004, which is 3 years worth of programming and updates ago. I'd suspect that the dat...

Re: Fajardo wedge question
I don't know much about flutemaking (yet), and I understand the reasoning. I've always wondered, if it's a more complex tone that people are after, why they insist the bore be completely smooth. I would think that some minor ripples/waves/whatever would make a much more complex tone, hence the reas...

Re: Fajardo wedge question
I was reading the fajardo thread, and I wondered... Anyone made a similar wedge to the tipple and used it in a wooden, conical bore flute? Wouldn't be that hard to whip up... John secondary benefit is that it does seem to make the flute tone more complex, which is good for ITM playing because it so...
