Angle Drilling Tone Holes

I came across this very optimistically priced traverso on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/German-Baroque-Boxwood-Traverse-Flute-Copy-by-MOECK-MINT-/330726362317?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d00d3cccd Check out the R1 (F#) and, to a lesser extent, the L1 (B) hole. I've seen this sort of angled d...

My mood could change, but right now I'd be partial to Brown Dog from the Jim Harrison novellas.

Re: Questions about renaissance-like flute making

I don't understand how I can get correct notes with that... especially for the F# hole (for a D flute). Even if I lower a bit its pitch to match Just Intonation, it should be larger and nearer the G hole to be not too much out of tune. I don't claim to be an expert, but the Renaissance flutes I hav...

Re: Johnny One-Note

I'm stepping a bit outside the parameters here, but I thought I'd share this video. It tells the story of "Frankie Five Notes" and pokes fun at the culture of one-upmanship in the trumpet community. Of course, the ITM community is much more civilized. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-V0...

I could tell by the way she high-stepped That she'd learned to dance uptown Where I come from we just kind of like to get drunk And slam bodies all around - Bill Morrissey, "Grizzly Bear" I hadn't heard the Bill Morrissey song, but I checked it out. Thanks for that. It made me think of th...

Re: Comparing the Qualities of Olwell and J. Gallagher Flutes?

I can't address your question directly but I can offer some observations that you may or may not find relevant. Over several decades I've observed hundreds of professional musicians trying out new (to them) instruments, mouthpieces, reeds, strings or bows. Unless the article in question is somehow d...

The Winter Carnival in Quebec City is a fabulous time. If you want lots to do in a very walkable city I recommend it highly.

Re: Wooden clarinet for Klezmer, I want...

Proper attire can also be crucial. :) If Dave Tarras was the "Benny Goodman" of Klezmer, one can say that Naftule Brandwein was a kind of a "Charlie Parker", a genius with a wild life, the King of Klezmer. Brandwein was quite an eccentric and imaginative fellow, sometimes while p...

Re: Environment, Tuning, different instraments.

I'll answer this in two parts. The first is the instrument upon which temperature changes have the greatest effect. From my own personal experience I'm voting for the tuba. For winds, the longer the air column, the greater the effect. Outdoor orchestra concerts demonstrate this quite well. As the ev...

Song Accompaniment, Part > 1

I remember a thread a while back that talked about accompanying songs with flute. I came across this and thought it a good example of the less is more school. The flute provides the introduction and then reenters at times to provide color to the sound. It certainly doesn't try to compete with or ove...

Re: Pipers Grip

Actually the piper Tommy Keane can play the tin whistle quite adeptly upside-down, with one hand; I'll have to ask him if he can do it on the flute as well (Tommy is an amazingly good flute player, one of my favorites, although he doesn't actually own a flute) Yeah, but can he do this? (Check it ou...

Re: Advice needed: Book/ Tutor Binding

You might want to consider what portion of your potential market will be libraries. I don't want to contradict Steampacket, but I deal with librarians frequently in my work and they are not, in general, fans of spiral bindings. Some of the reasons are mentioned here: http://www.srmarchivists.org/ser...
