Uilleann Piper Documentary could use a little support.
Hi everyone.
Been a little bit since I've been around the site.
Lewis Blevins and Patrick D'Arcy recommended I post a note.
A project that I have quietly been working on could use a bit of support.
I'm in production on a documentary film on a handful of Uilleann
pipers that I really love and know. I'm cobbling together a story
from interviews, old source footage, radio, personal effects and so on.
Basically hanging around folks and chasing down good stories.
So if yer chops are good and yer in Ireland, look me up.
I've gathered a handful of investment from a proprietor of a well-known
pub in Dublin, but to carry on more support needs to arrive. My personal
savings have been officially hemorrhaged! I'm posting this to see if any
in the community like what they hear and see and have an interest in
supporting a project on pipers by a piper. A side joy of the whole
endeavor is all the archival footage that has been recorded.
I better nose this down. Please PM me or email at juntorimur@gmail.com
and we can be in touch. The trailer and written proposal is at my website.
All the best,
Davis Watson

It sounds like a great project and because of the nature of the documentary I'm sure something like the Irish arts council or similar organisations would be well worth approaching. NPU should be able to steer you in the right direction.

Quick question. who is the piper at 4:23. he was a good friend of Al Purcell.
good man. I played with him back when he came to Ann Arbor, but I am bad with names.

That sounds about Right. Joe Doyle.. Names for me are like tunes I can recall them if I hear them but have a hard time dredging them up from the depths of my mind... I can start maybe 20 tunes off the top of my head, but if you hum a few bars or opening notes I know hundreds. it's frustrating.

Does anybody have a clue who made Joe Doyle´s daughters set?

A) I don't think Banba Fitzgerald is related to Joe by blood.Hans-Joerg wrote:Does anybody have a clue who made Joe Doyle´s daughters set?
B) Banba's set looks like an O'Briain or the work of one of his disciples. What's really impressive is her playing. Her pipes sound good, but she's making them sound good. . Joe must be very proud of her.

So, will we have an answer to Seán P.'s question about whether the camera was on? Bit sneaky to make a covert film.
Interesting group of subjects, I've always been curious about Joe Doyle's piping, him being a Touheyphile and all.
If it were me I'd make the whole thing very ominous, with that extra portentous Hollywood narration. "They thought they were simply taking up a different type of bagpipe...but little did they know about...THE BACK D!!!!!"

So, I saw in the recent An Piobaire that this film is out & has premiered in Dublin. Is there any news on a more general release, in the US or maybe on DVD?
That girl's (Banba Fitzgerald, i guess) playing is fantastic. Only those brief few seconds are great. I'd love to hear more from her.
Ohh, i forgot, the name for it is now "Good Piping" The trailer can be seen here http://vimeo.com/24786300

- Tell us something.: I am interested in various forms of traditional and folk music. I've been interested in Uilleann pipes for many years. And now I'm finally learning them!
