Tell us something.: in two words, Rudall & Rose. but since a minimum of 100 characters is required, I should list a number of makers I found extremely interesting… I don't even know how much are 100 characters...

Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus, as my flute has turned up. I recommend placing the info in one's case, as i had done, that says an address, a phone number and in this case I had written, "reward for return, no questions asked". Someone called up and said the flute had been found near where I was staying. So thanks to everyone who wrote with info, sympathy and offers to look out for it; I think I will chain it to my wrist after this, Patrick Olwell

Okay, every last one of us:

Walk away from the keyboard, go get a little slip of paper, write your contact details on it, and slip it into your flute case. Going to do mine right now.

Congrats, Paddy!

Heck, I'm even going to go out and buy a flute, just so I can put my name in it.

(Good suggestion, Rob.)

I've noticed in the past that Patrick and Aran always seem to keep an address label somewhere in their cases. Now I see why!

Just did mine...anyone else done theirs yet?

You're not the boss of me, Rob...but I'm going to do it anyway (just haven't gotten around to it since I just saw this message). You take such good care your flute, it's hard to imagine it could get lost without getting stolen, but a flute case is small enough to get pushed aside, fall behind something, etc.

Patrick - congratulations on getting your flute back.

That was more in the line of an exhortation than an order ("C'mon, kids!"), but at least the sense of it hit home!

I got it...I love saying that to people, myself. Thanks, though, for giving me the chance to use the word "exhortation" in casual conversation!

If I'd kept it to myself, would it have been an inhortation?

I'm very glad to hear that you have your flute back safe and sound. :) Perhaps a GPS tracker such as the Zoombak concealed inside a little hidden compartment in the case could be used to locate the whereabouts of missing instruments. The flute and the case could become separated of course but in the event of a theft, the thief would have the hassle of getting another case in order to sell the flute on.
Info about the Zoombak:

Hope!! yous missed the important bit above - the incentive. Sure, I'll give you back the instrument I lifted, if you grease my palms with a few (hundred) dollars!! Standard enough scam even here in Ireland, stuff gets nicked and then a call...

Maybe so. But let's not blame the victim here. A lost or stolen instrument can happen to any of us. Instrument thieves are below contempt. But the point of a reward is to game their system and lead to recovery. As opposed to, uh, not recovery. And sometimes the ways of the world truly suck.
