Matt Molloy, "Music of the Seals" on Shadows on St

Post by srt19170 »

Can anyone help me out identifying or transcribing the first tune on Track 9 ("Music of the Seals") on Matt Molloy's "Shadows on Stone" CD? Or look on the liner and see if he indicates what it is? It starts out

B2BG AGEF G2Bd edgd

according to my (tin) ear, but I can't find anything of the sort. Thanks for any help!

From your ABC, it looks like The Morning Star:

Is this it? This is from a 1948 book of Scottish tunes.

Yes, that's the second tune in the track. Matt plays it in G.

The first tune is very simple:

Thanks for the help! I'm surprised my transcription was more-or-less correct as far as I took it.

A few years ago I went nuts over this track with the seals. I'd borrowed a book which turned out to be the book mentioned there on the liner notes, The People of the Sea by David Thomson - after I read it, I bought my own. It was on Amazon and the (later) edition I had bought also contained notation of the seals' music in the back of the book. All the pieces adapted for this seals track seem to be in the book.
