No whistle Youtube thread? Well then!

Post by sturob »

Since there's no sticky for a YouTube thread of whistling . . . like there are for piping and fluting . . .

I encourage everyone to watch/listen to Jimmy mo mhile stór, sung here in Scots Gaelic rather than the usual Irish. Mick O'Brien does whistle on the clip, so it's not really all that off-topic.

Kathleen MacInnes, who's a native speaker of Scots Gaelic, has a great voice for airs, does she not? Wow. This is just one of my favorite air melodies and I thought it'd be nice to share it.

And it's not as depressing as the usual Gaelic air. Briefly, her love, Jimmy, has gone to sea. She sings of how she wants to be with him. And, it's not even implied that he's dead! Maybe this is sean-nós on Prozac.

Tell us something.: Longtime member of Chiff and Fipple. I own/have owned more whistles than a person should, I think. But I’m not complaining.

still hasn't caught on yet. anyway, here's Cormac Breatnach playing Si Bheag Si Mhor with Micheal O Suileabhain.

Some of his more taditional stuff. For those who like low whistle and jazz, here's a clip with Cormac and band. I still can't tell the difference between kerry pro and overton, so i don't know what he's playing.

In this clip he is playing an Overton made by Bernard which was modified by Cillian OBriain years before Kerry pros ever were thought of. Phil just copied the idea of the tuning slide at a later date. I have come across many Overtons that have had that conversion done and yes the Kerry pro does look identical to them from a distance so it would be confusing. The only way to know for sure is to ask the person who owns it.

Maybe change the name of this thread, now that it's officially sticky?
