Eh, click on the chat link on the bottom of the forum index page. Choose a chat name and off you go.

Thanks. Couldn't tell if I was doing things right because no one else was on at the time. I'll have to try it some time.

Yes, if there is no one there, nothing happens! You get a blank page. If people are chatting, though, the screen will fill with chat.

If you see that someone is there, but nothing happens, it may be that they are not at their computer. Apparently, they sign in and wander off while waiting for someone to show up. If you say hello, they'll see you there eventually.

For a year, I thought that I was just doing something wrong!

Oh, and I have noticed that it helps to have web accelerator programs, popup blockers, and such disabled while chatting.
