How do you pronounce "Feadog"?

Post by stratochicnic »

I'm looking to get one at my local music store and I don't want to sound like an idiot mispronouncing it :)

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

FATH-ogue. "A" pretty much as in "rat", "TH" as in "that" but more like a D, "ogue" as in "rogue". That's as close as you can get with English equivalents.

I'll bet your music store clerk doesn't know how to pronounce it, either. Dollars to doughnuts you'll hear, "Oh, you mean "FEE-dog"!

LOL Thanks for the help.

Worst case scenario, I locate it, point and say, "I want THAT one" :D

Nano's right. You can't win - if you choose the Irish pronunciation they'll do the "Oh, you mean "FEE-dog" thing, while if you say "fee-dog" you can bet the store assistant will be fluent in Gaelic.

Solution 1) Point and say: "I want that one". (For those of you in the UK, this should be delivered in the voice of Andy Pipkin from Little Britain.)

Solution 2) Get it mail order.
And whether the blood be highland, lowland or no.
And whether the skin be black or white as the snow.
Of kith and of kin we are one, be it right, be it wrong.
As long as our hearts beat true to the lilt of a song.

Now are you sure? We don't want to cause a kerfuffle...

Yeah you're probably right. I'll just go and pick it out myself

But I'll ask my professor next week. She's Irish ;)

It's not Irish that's for sure :D

'Strato' --> Abbreviation of the Fender Stratocaster
'chic' --> NO, not the abbreviation of Chicken, just chic, as in girl
'nic' --> Abbreviation of Nicki ;)
