"Last week the Union of Concerned Scientists, an influential and non-partisan group that includes 20 Nobel laureates, accused the Bush administration of having deliberately distorted scientific fact to serve its policy agenda and having "misled the public". "

Get out...he would never do something like that!

Twice. Or however many times it is now.

The sky may indeed fall. Fine. We'll deal with it or not.

November? Election? I knew there was a real advantage to living on a Welsh hillside with no television and no newspapers.

Just music and nature and the world goes on quite rockily enough without a global perspective, thank you... :boggle:

If anybody's wondering why I posted the article, it's because I found it amusing, not alarming. I'm not Elendil.

<snotty sophomore geology undergraduate student>

The fact of the matter is remains, however, that nobody really knows exactly how much of the current warming trend is due to human activities and how much is due to natural forces.

The climate has been warming up since the end of the last ice age (certainly before people started burning coal), and even if we suddenly shut down all the fossil-fuel burning plants and automobiles on the planet, the temperature would *still* be rising slightly on an annual basis.

Little known fact: The Earth is much cooler right now than it has been for the majority of its geologic history, and much more of the land is above ocean level than it has been for the majority of geologic history.

So, that begs the question: how much impact are the activities of mankind having on the climate? Nobody really knows. Undoubtedly there *is* an effect, but the delicate climatic controls of this planet are poorly understood and there's no way to know what effect we are really having, to what degree, and there's certainly no way to stop this planet from warming up.

Me? I'm not going to worry about it. Most of the projections I've seen place such disasters around 150-200 years from now, not 20. Timefram aside, I'm sure the people who used to live on the land between Ireland and Wales were quite unpleased when the sea moved in and took over, but life goes on, right? The fact remains we can't do anything to stop the inevitable tides of nature. We live on this Earth, but ultimately we do not own it and we cannot control it.

I'm not Elendil.
Neither am I. Anyone else out there who isn't Elendil?

But if war is gonna define human life, we need to be prepared for more scenes like this one, below. It's called: "Can Uday come out and play?"

Much to the surprise of investigators, evidence is mounting that major changes in the earth’s climate can take place in a very short time. Data from ice cores and ocean sediments suggest, for example, that 11,650 years ago the climate in Greenland switched from ice-age conditions to the current relatively warm conditions (a warming of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius on average) in only 40 years.

Another way to help control Earth's climate is to require a dam at the Strait of Gibraltar.

Canada could be covered with ice within 100 years.
