My grandfather was born in Passage West County Cork.
I still have family over there, and thought it might be nice to learn some tunes on my whistle that might be popular in the region some of my ancestry comes from.

I asked my mum's second cousin what tunes she liked, what was popular there in Cork, and what her faves were. I wanted to learn something she'd know and share with her, she's thrilled to know I'm taking up the whistle. My mum mentioned how much she loved taking them to listen to people play at the local pub when they visited. She's fairly elderly, and I thought I might make her smile if I played something she loved, and asked her to pick her favourites. I expected to get a list of tunes, played on the regular there, that I could listen to and learn. She said she knew someone who knew all the tunes and which to learn first.

I have a list of songs now, not exactly what I was expecting.

The Dawning of the day,
Danny Boy,
When Irish Eyes are smiling,
Over in Killarney,
If we only had Old Ireland over here.

She even recommended Bing Crosby to learn them as he sung quite a few of them.

I'll learn them, and play them for her, but they're not exactly what I wanted.

Thought it was cute, so had to share.

(what's more, I already knew the first three, just need to make them pretty)

A little bit of trivia: Terry Moylan composed a jig called 'The Hard Road to Passage' in honour of a very long walk there (can't remember how that came about, they missed a bus or something perhaps. He did tell me once but memory fades).

My brain hurts
