That Ray Sloan set is quite an attractive set.
Anyone know what the extra nob up on the main stock does?
Just curious

Probably to tie a strap onto. The Ennis pipes have a similar little brass knob on the brass cover of the mainstock cup that has the strap attached to it.

It could be his innovation called the stock lock. I think its some kind of screw gizmo that tightens the mainstock into position.

Yeah, I think it's his thing to keep the mainstock in the stock cup without having to over hemp the stock.

The Childress set seems to be hanging around a long while at a good price- full sets seem to usually go faster than this. Anybody want to weigh in as to why, out of curiosity?

Could be that people are not interested in buying with the economic uncertainty around the pandemic. There are several sets for sale which haven’t received any bids.

AH- yes, being relatively new to this, I wondered it that might be the opinion of some members here. What would you say they lack?

Unless you have first hand knowledge of an instrument, I think it's unfair to criticize a maker like that. I've never played one of his instruments, but I've had dealings with Bruce Childress (he helped with reeds for a vintage instrument I had) and he was knowledgeable, and generous with his time and more. There are forum members playing his instruments that speak highly of them.

Be that as it may , I've never heard one of his sets that I thought sounded nice and his sets lack a certain aesthetic refinement , but thats just my opinion , as you've said other pipers think his sets are good enough ,so its all good.

Hey Mike ,

Glad to hear you are recovering!

I bought a set of yours from someone in this forum 2 years ago, and the set was in a pretty bad condition. I managed to get someone to help me here in Quebec, Canada to get them to a better state.

I would like to communicate with you, I tried by email and your webpages but everything seems to be offline. If you could please let me know any way of communicating with you? Or someone else that has an updated email/contact? I have a few things I would like to ask you =).

Sorry for the offtopic guys, but its the only way I have of communicating with him right now, I tried contacting him many times over the past 2 years and all the emails bounced back.

Cheers and happy piping!
