Another occasional thread revival....

New from the astounding Alexis Kossenko, this first video in his new Les Concerts de Pan series of videos of performances of flute music through the ages on appropriate period instruments.
This one is to my mind quite astounding, not least the rather unusual-for-a-Romantic-era-composer approach to trying to depict folk music - in this case the drone-based bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy music of Central France. Alexis also offers an excellent explanation of the particular instrument - spoken in (very clear!) French, but the text in English is in the blurb.

It's here on YouTube: https://youtu.be/GHd94bhNcK8
or here on Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_ ... 0661478223

You can see the taster/promo video for the series and get notifications as new videos are released on the Facebook Page for the project or subscribe to the YouTube Channel.

Enjoy!

And another, so soon!

Here's the YouTube channel of a young Swedish fluter, Sofia Dahlén, who is specialising in late Romantic German flutes - Meyer, Schwedler etc. and the music belonging to them.

A new CD (hard copy available in May 2020) from period flute specialist Dorothea Seel, playing three different original C19th wooden flutes in typical virtuoso arrangements of popular operatic material. You can preview the CD booklet here

It can already be listened to on Spotify and other streaming outlets.

Alexis Kossenko has now published a video performance of the Charles Nicholson arrangement of "Roslin Castle" on Facebook. :-)
It's lovely - exquisite Nicholsonian playing! He's playing a modern copy of a German mid C19th flute, not a Nicholson era English one (he's in lockdown away from home and his flute collection), but I think he gets the gist!

Nicholson's notation and an explanation of his symbols/techniques can be seen here: http://www.oldflutes.com/articles/roslincastle.htm

Both Alexis and Rob Turner have also recently put up recordings on appropriate period flutes of their interpretations of the setting of "Roselana [Rosslyn] Castle", from James Oswald's "The Caledonian Pocket Companion", Book IIII, London, ca. 1750

New out from the amazing Anna Besson, and quite superb (of course!) - period instruments, naturally - Variations on Folk Songs - Beethoven, Kuhlau & Doppler (& Walckiers): https://outhere-music.com/en/albums/Bee ... s-ALPHA639

I understand Anna uses two flutes, a Liebel copy (Dresden, c.1830) by Fridtjof Aurin and a Tulou "Perfectionnée" by Mangeant, original, c.1850. The fortepiano is an original Graf (1835).

I'm listening to it right now on Spotify and have ordered hard copy. It's on YouTube too, and no doubt the other streaming platforms.

Go buy it!

Video of a live concert of a similar programme to the CD mentioned in the previous post - the stunning Anna Besson on a replica 1830s Liebel and Olga Pashchenko on a replica 1820s piano. Eat your heart out for "hard" low notes and crisp open hole flute ornamentation. A must watch!

I don't believe this flutist has been mentioned: Mariya Miliutsina. My apologies if she has. I find her recording of the Doppler Fantasie very moving:

Her tone, including on the low notes, is outstanding. Chet

Further Thread Revival

New on YouTube -
Benoît-Tranquille Berbiguier, 2ème Grand Solo Op. 1 in Em - Isabelle Chenot

An impressive (student recital???) performance of a showpiece by Berbiguier (author of a flute method and many exercises for Romantic era keyed simple system flute ), fairly appropriately played on a late C19th French 8-key flute by Halary-Sudre. The form and sound of French simple system flutes changed very little throughout the century, so the 50-70 year gap between composition and flute isn't really anachronistic. More and more classical players, particularly current students, are moving into this territory, at last!

We should also note this project by the fantastic German player Anne Pustlauk, already mentioned up-thread. She is working her way through recording all the competition pieces written by Tulou for the Paris Conservatoire annual examinations, with research on the competing students and their instruments and subsequent careers, playing on a selection of appropriate period flutes: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcg5 ... jhW_YesNVd

There's also information about the project on her website: https://anne-pustlauk.de/paris-concours/

Well worth watching/listening to all of them, and reading the blurbs, and subscribing so that you see the new ones as they are issued!

(Note, do the same for Alexis Kossenko's superb ongoing series! https://youtube.com/@lesconcertsdepanalexiskoss6325)
