Tell us something.: I am a flute, guitar, keyboard + whistle player learning about quality whistles, musical possibilities and playing techniques. I've recorded a CD of my own music and am creating music for kids.

Have to admire the clear tone achieved easily by using a whistle mouthpiece on the piccolo and flute.

Not sure what else can be done on piccolo, I've never played one but would love to have more notes on a whistle. The flute sounds clear, but the whistle mouthpiece prevents the player from having control over the angle the air stream hits the window/blade edge and also the focus of it. A whistle mouthpiece gives you one wide stream of air and all you can control is the general air supply pressure. Developing an embouchure capable of various effects on the flute, is something I value too practically, VS replacing it with a whistle. For some people, it might be the practical way to get access to the flute.

This gives me the idea of getting a drill out and putting more holes in a regular brass whistle. There are six holes, where there could be ten? Anyone done that? Seven or eight holes?

What's next?

The idea of mixing parts of different instruments together is interesting. When it works, you might get, the Saxophone invented! When it doesn't work, you get those horrid bamboo tube/sax headjoint combos that sound like rhinos having indigestion.

Skip Healy is yer man for the ten key idea. https://www.facebook.com/skip.healy.5 He makes dead serious instruments in Blackwood. The US Army Fife and Drum Corps use his ten hole fifes. https://www.fifeanddrum.army.mil/kids_instruments.html
