Re: Crown design option.
That's wild. From a little googling:
""The cork-lid trapdoor spider has a highly sclerotised and abruptly truncated abdominal posterior, which is used as a plug to its burrow entrance. This prevents any effective attacks from predators such as wasps.""

Wow. It's kinda pretty, in an H. R. Giger sort of way.

Not quite the Lion Rampant facing a Unicorn Rampant Crest on the Rudall Rose Patented Head.*
But it is suggestive.
*Note, I am not an expert at Heraldry, but that would be my poor attempt at partially Blazening it.

I guess it would be alright in an emergency.......as long as it keeps its legs away from the embouchure hole.

Re: Crown design option.
So I'm imagining that drinks have just been served to the session table, but yours is a little inconveniently out-of-reach. So you unplug your well-trained cork-lid trapdoor spider from its receptacle in the head of your flute, and casually flick it onto the table towards the said glass. The spider whips around behind the glass and pushes it across the table towards you. As you reach for the glass, it jumps onto the back of your hand, runs up your arm, across the back of your shoulders, down your other arm, onto the flute, runs up the flute and, turning briefly for a bow to the rest of the dumbstruck session, dives back into its hidey-hole. You take a drink....

Singed the leg hairs of my cork-lid trapdoor spider....
(Seriously, we do get trap-door spiders around here, and I uncovered one recently in my vege garden. They are not generally regarded as good company....)

Re: Crown design option.
That backside is reminiscent of the wombat, which has a thick cartilaginous butt. If it's threatened, it goes into its burrow head first, leaving its impenetrable tush facing outward. I can't find it, but somewhere there's a picture of fluter-harper Shelley Phillips with a full-grown wombat in her lap.
