Leo Rickard short documentary

Post by Steampacket »

Saw this very interesting short documentary about shipwright and uilleann piper, Leo Rickard. Leo talks about his working life at Dublin Port.

That was lovely. Leo is a sound man.

Was doing a bit of scanning of old stuff and found this, everybody was ridiculously young at the time

Here's another one taken after the Willie piping concert, Tommie Reck had come out of retirement and everybody was hyped. A good few of us who had played at the concert went to the hotel after, a lot of people came along. Micho Russell was there, Paddy Keenan, Francie McPeake, Ronnie Wathen and a bunch of others.

There were some jokes about Leo greasing the hair back, Keenan liked it, apparently, and Leo went up to the room for the old Brylcreem. Keenan put on half the jar and they played like that for a while.

Great photos!
Can anyone name the last tune he is playing starting around 3:45or so? It is a tune I play, but for the life of me I can't find the title.

Grand photos there Peter! Yes, they were young indeed. Both Leo, Mick, and Paddy were always very supportive and encouraging regarding my attempts to pipe when I ran into them at Willie Weeks 1996 and onwards.

Who's that on Leo's left in the first picture? Mick Coyne?

Yes, it's Mick Coyne. I don't know what pipes he has in this photo though, it's taken before he got his O'Briain set

Bruce DuVé by the looks of and if my memory of it is anything to go by.
He has a different chanter here but the same body, it would seem:

Yes, looks like a Cillain O'Briain chanter there Peter.
