I have a C that I'll happily let go but don't want to loose too much on the price.

There's a brass 'D' on Ebay - may be of interest.

Maybe this is stupid of me, but why not buy direct from Killarney? They post them out ever so quick, and they don't cost much. Or is it that they do cost a lot by the time they get to the States?

… which doesn't seem much to me, particularly not for what they are. And, given that people who have them "don't want to lose much on the price", personally I'd go straight to them.

No the Killarney's cost isn't higher coming to the USA. The difference is the exchange rate is all. I'm all for buying new and direct from the whistle maker. The general consensus floating around the forums here is buying used instruments hoping for a devaluation to save a few dollars. If the devaluation is only a few dollars why bother with the used instrument. Buy direct and support the maker.

There's a point to be made for keeping stuff that's already been made in use, rather than piling on more newly made things. Perhaps a wider discussion more suitable for another time an place.

Moot point though, in this case. I agreed to the sale of my C and am awaiting payment.

The exchange rate is quite favorable to U.S. customers at the moment, about $1.10 to the Euro. That's about as good as it ever gets. A good time to buy anything priced in Euro or travel to Ireland/Europe.

My reference was in regard to recent comments here in this thread:

And another issue with me at least is when buying used instruments especially ones that have passed thru several owners hands the next buyer doesn't know how much tinkering has been done on the instrument unless precise records have been kept and provided during purchase discussion. Some people tweak their instruments to their own likes in pitch and playing styles. Ya know... filing a hole or shaving a bit of length off a tube etc., that kind of tweaking. :)

Yes, exactly.

Altering the whistle maker's original design production ought to devalue the instrument considerably. I've always wondered why individuals that alter... I mean butcher an instrument don't just go make their own instruments to their likings to begin with. Altering especially the high end whistles that command top prices ought not be allowed without original instrument maker's permission, otherwise, the instrument is no longer that top ender. Buyer beware, and questioning whether instrument has been altered in any way ought to be asked with every purchase.

That’d be the day that I was told what to do
with my personal property.
As soon as the instrument polizei were in place
I’d buy an expensive tooter and hack it into bits and
hammer it back together again.
