Nonsense, other names and so on.

Post by Fildafluter »

Ok I admit I had to re-read this book's review.

https://www.amazon.com/Making-Sense-Non ... 0738763160

But it go me wondering about other names for 'nonsense', not in the dictionary.

I fondly recall a local Surrey Uk word ' twaddle' as one contender. Then there was my father's lovely barber-shop slang, 'balderdash', for, well, piffle!

Post your favorite below.

Thank you.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

"Twaddle" is, as far as I know, prevalent throughout Great Britain and Ireland. "Balderdash" is also pretty universal.

I'm not quite sure what you're after here ... ? Common words for codswallop?

When we're being serious, Yanks seem to favor excrement, so BS (that's the compressed version) is probably the most usual. "Crap" and similar (I think I needn't insult everyone's intelligence by taking it further) are up there, too. I might say "nonsense" if I were using a more polite register, but I'd be more likely to say "wrong" or "mistaken". I would say "twaddle" for a laugh.

Ah the 'cod's stroke'. Wonder did some event give rise to that one?

How about consulting a thesaurus - this is what they are for after all :-)

From Chambers Thesaurus:

noun
rubbish, trash, drivel, balderdash, gibberish, gobbledygook, senselessness, stupidity, silliness, foolishness, folly, twaddle, ridiculousness, codology, blague, doggerel; dialect faddle, havers; dialect & N Am blathers; Scot blethers, clamjamphrie

old galimatias

colloq. stuff and nonsense, double Dutch, mumbo-jumbo, bunk, bunkum, claptrap, cobblers, poppycock, piffle, waffle, flannel, rot, tripe, tosh, bosh, tommyrot, codswallop, baloney, humbug, hooey, bilge, bull, blah, eyewash, hogwash, rhubarb, guff, malarkey, moonshine

You can look up the Slang/vulgar part yourself. :-)

I think we should revive the word galimatias. It's great.

Reading the book description in the OP, it strikes me that the book uses "nonsense" not for erroneous material, but for fanciful or whimsical material. It specifically mentions Dr. Seuss; Edward Lear might also qualify. This is a different thing entirely from the synonyms we've proposed.

For Glasgow and the West of Scotland it's 'mince' , 'pure mince' if the nonsense is unadulterated.
