Thin chanters from modern makers

Post by Pipezilla »

I'm re-dipping into uilleann pipes and I'm curious as to which modern makers make a thinner style chanter (concert pitch). I've owned bulky chanters in the past and my hands just down seem to work as well. A friend of mine owns a Kohler? chanter which plays so well, and I think I'd like to find something similar.

You might want to contact Andreas Rogge. He makes a narrow bore D- might suit you.

Tell us something.: I'm back in the uilleann piping world after a ten year hiatus. Uilleann piping chops, here I come!

I'm a smallpipe and Border pipe maker and we'll just see where that leads to.

I think he's looking for a thinner outside profile, not bore?

Tim Britton for a thin chanter, (mine had scalloped tone holes), and amazing reed. http://www.skep.com/britton/

Then you might consider some of the makers that have studied extensively under David Quinn; Martin Preshaw, Chris Coe, and Makoto Nakatsui are three that I know of.

Martin Preshaw was very overweight for years but he took up running and lost loads of weight and is now quite thin, so he's your man. Brad Angus also looks quite thin .

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

There's at least one Coyne chanter that is quite narrow (in profile). I believe some (living) makers have made reproductions of that or similar.

Tell us something.: Having taken time out from the pipes etc to focus on trumpet for 12 years.
During that time, I suffered a subarachnoid brain haemorrhage and so, after rebuilding myself and coming to terms with my limitations, I'm now slowly getting back into my whistles and maybe pipes next year.

I have a Hunter chanter that is 14.5mm wide around the top hand. That’s pretty skinny! It’s made out of Lignum Vitae so pretty hard stuff.

Silly me, funny how the mind works. I read it as modern chanters from thin makers .
This is possibly the thinnest a chanter can be. Made by Johnny Doran I wonder what it sounded like .

Who was that maker back in the 1970s, Wilkinson-McCarthy?

My first practice set, around 1976, was said to be made by them and the chanter was turned very thin, like a Highland pipe chanter.

It's the thinnest uilleann chanter I've seen, except for that metal one above!

The W-McC I had was very chunky, in fact it looked half finished, the blocks in the square and all that. I was very glad to be rid of that set but it got me through my first year, more or less. Got that forty years ago this week, as it happens. The week of the storm at the Fastnet race.

It was 40 years ago last month that I got my first practice set from Matt Kiernan. He wrapped it up in brown paper, with twine, like something from a drapers shop.

Seems like only a few years ago; certainly not 40.

Cheers

I started on a Kevin Thompson chanter. It was slim. Is he still making?

Time does tend to get away. I realised last year I had reached the age Micho Russell was when I first met him. I thought he was ancient at the time. Meh.
