Iconic vehicles

Post by daveboling »

This week in 1971, Apollo 15 became the first mission to use the Lunar Roving Vehicle. The LRV was a lightweight, electric vehicle designed to operate in the low-gravity vacuum environment of the Moon. It was capable of traversing the lunar surface, allowing Apollo astronauts to extend the range of their extravehicular activities. Here, the LRV is pshown alone against the lunar background following the third Apollo 15 EVA.
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center museum, here in Huntsville, has the full-scale EDU (Engineering Development Unit) on display. The tires (tyres) are the ultimate in run-flat in that they are constructed of stainless steel wire mesh, thus being filled with vacuum (and a bit of lunar dust).

So, trying to keep this from being yet another space-themed thread, post an image of a vehicle which evokes to you a particular memory or character. Here's one that won't need any elaboration from me:

I teleported home one night
With Ron and Sid and Meg.
Ron stole Meggie's heart away
And I got Sidney's leg.

My Transit Connect van:

Sure, it's no sports car, but I've had it 14 years from new, bought it because it was what I wanted, and still don't know what I'll replace it with when I have to...
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.

Ah, that's a perfect vehicle for transporting one's misdeeds, Peter. Good choice.

I wanted to post one of mine, that evoked a particular memory.

A while ago I opened an account at Cloudinary on the advice of someone here at C&F; it works and is free but is a bit complicated to upload photos to (not a user-friendly interface). I don't use it often enough to remember the tricks to make it work. Meanwhile, I have quite a few old photos held hostage at photobucket, many of which I no longer have copies of in my own files.
