Crook-neck Susato low C

Post by clepsydrae »

Hi -- I have a low C Susato, with the bent neck (looks similar to the low D in this video). I love it. I'm playing it in a group, so now I get nervous that if I ever lose it or damage it I'd be stuck without a low C, so I've been shopping around a bit.

The trouble is that Susato no longer makes the 45-degree whistles, which is a bummer to me, but the bigger issue is that they only make keyed low C's, which I'm not excited about (due to occasional chromatic playing, bent notes, etc.)

Does any other maker make a keyless low-C with a 45 degree bend?

Thanks!

That's a good question!

I don't know of any. Hopefully somebody who does know will chime in.

I played an angled-neck Susato Low C for many years and it was a superb whistle.

Susato also made angled-neck Low D's, I had one, and the reach was so easy! I don't know why more makers don't do that with their Low D's.

Here are several Low D's compared, including a Susato with angled neck.

Yeah, my low C is a really nice whistle. I don't have broad experience, but I like it a lot. My low D (also Susato) is nice, but the C is a bit mellower. Of course I've also played it for many more years than the D, so it probably just feels right for that reason.

I certainly get lots of comments on the angled neck... shame that they don't do it anymore. :-)
