Piper's Stool/Chair

Post by CaperMike »

Many a time I've attempted to play in places without a suitable chair. Of course, chairs with arms are the worst, but too small-armed chairs and various high stools can be uncomfortable/inappropriate for playing UPs.

Any recommendations for portable chairs/stools? Maybe a foldable version that can be packed in the case with the set ? :)

Cheers,

Mike

I use a folding keyboard stool:

This one is a whopping $16 on eVilbay.
If the height is not adjustable, make sure you try it first. Just an inch or two either way make a huge difference after a long sit. Some drummer's stools have a small back support which looks tempting...

I use this one, a Proline PL1250: http://prolinestands.com/pl1250-keyboar ... mory-foam/

It is height adjustable, and the memory foam is easy on the bum. But it will set you back $92 US on Amazon.com.

Tell us something.: I'm a piper of 15 years. ~10 were Scottish, ~5 Irish. I currently run the Irish Pipers club in Seattle. I'm a regular at most of the local sessions, and run a beginners session at a local music school.

My first pipe instructor always took a cane-stool to highland games

Never used one myself, but I think they're pretty ingenious. There are several versions of this concept if you look around.

Each time I see the thread title I think 'Piper's Chair', before reverting to 'not the one they are asking about'. Sunday morning brain.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

[channeling Rory] “Piper’s stool” is a recognized medical condition, for which is described the orthopedic piper’s chair.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.
