Lives of the pipers- piper biography additions

Post by nwhitmer »

I have a Website, Lives of the Pipers, with short biographies of selected uilleann pipers active in North America 1850-1950.

I thought to start this thread to announce when I add biographies. I'll be doing so every once in a while.

Newly added:

Shaun O'Nolan (1873-1945) Boston and New York City, entertainer and songwriter
James J. Scanlon (circa 1865-1942) New York City, musician and bandleader

All the best,

Great project Nick,

I would love to see you include Tom Standeven. He was squeezing away at a time when the pipes were in decline in Ireland,
knew so many of the great players and he influenced an awful llot of people with his music, including me.

Tell us something.: An uilleann piper of 14 years from ireland.
I like a drop of fine Irish whiskey with a few tunes.
Sometimes I also think life would have been so much easier if I had taken up the concertina.

Tell us something.: If you flush your toilet 7 times whilst lilting "The Bucks of Oranmore", an apparition of one of the great pipers of old will appear in the mirror, you will be blessed with good reeds, but cursed with bad bags and bellows.

Tell us something.: Been a piper about 20 years (uilleann), flute on and off over the years, classical and trad. Played classical piano growing up, bought one recently for my daughter to take lessons on, and got right back into it, but this time playing Irish tunes (Pádraig O'Reilly is my current idol).

I'm just coming across this now Nick. I've read a couple, and they really paint a vivid picture of what life was like for these guys. Look forward to reading more. Well done!
