Tell us something.: I have grown up surrounded by Irish music and culture and have played the whistle since first grade. I love playing the various instruments I have aquired over the years and would love to help others with their instruments in any way I can.

Hi Yankee1!
The two represent completely different ends of the spectrum. One, the Milligan, blends the whistle sound with a more flute-like tone. The Killarney is reminiscent of the more traditional Irish, almost generation-like sound. At the end of the day, it depends what you want out of a whistle. If you're primarily playing Irish traditional music, then the Killarney is a great choice. Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with the Milligan. In fact, a lot of Scottish instrumentalists I know actually prefer the more woodsy, flute-like tone.

One more thing, the Killarneys I've used take WAY less breath than my Milligan. Not necessarily a bad thing, but a good thing to keep in mind :)
Hope this helped!

OK.. Tend to agree with previous post. One is a thick wall wood. One is a thin wall nickel plated brass. Not even in the same league. Apples and oranges.

A better comparison might be Killarney vs another thin wall nickel with short beak Delrin head.. Or a tweaked Freeman.... Or Milligan vs O'Brien or Abell... Compare apples to apples.

Good luck.

One sounds like a tin whistle.
The other sounde like a pennywinkle.

I've reviewed both of these here, and on my website.

I agree with the other posters: The Killarney is brighter and crisp and lively.

The milligan is complex and woodsy.

Both are great whistles.

I’ve owned both. Sold the Killarney, and prefer the “quiet head” Milligan as my primary session whistle.

I know you're asking about sound but the other difference is the $100+ bump in price. But their rosewood and cocobolo ones look VERY cool.
