Tell us something.: irish music, specifically slow airs played on different whistle keys, also lower keyed flutes like Bb, but only from modern makers who have managed to get the hole spacing a little closer. And finally learning some fiddle tunes, mainly slow airs again so that the whole family don't go mad with the sound of a cat being strangled.

crazy priced Sindt on ebay

Post by sponge »

Well, I know we are all happy if we manage to make a little profit on gear we are not using, or just break even, so is it just me, or do you guys and girls feel the same when
good quality whistles come up for sale at CRAZY prices, the link below started at £975 - $1325, they then dropped it to a very reasonable £565 - $767 NOT, don't get
me wrong Iv'e had 4 of Jons whistles C/D and then a couple of D's when I realised I shouldn't of sold the first one, and now am happy to keep my current one, but if I did sell,
I'd ask a cheeky £200, with the hope of getting £175, regardless of waiting lists, or difficulty in getting one.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/John-Sindt-T ... SwGMJa33c6

There is also a Ralph sweet blackwood C on for £549 - $746, but this seller clearly says that it's rare and the company is no longer trading, strictly that is true , but the same model
is being produced slightly wider bands at MusiqueMorneaux.com. and from Ralphs old workshop

anyway thats my rant over, i'm not associated with the sale apart from..... sending a message to both sellers, asking in a polite way about the prices, so if your a member here I do apologise.

So how much would you guys and girls pay for a top ender, $100 - $200 _ $300 over the new price, O'riordans don't count as that's to much like Unicorn blood.....

I'm pretty happy with my killarney whistles, which are pretty clearly sindt clones.

A whistle is a pretty simple piece of business, relatively speaking, so that's pretty far above the top limit I'd go. It would be nice to own a piece of whistle history (whistley?), but that should go to a better player than me

I wouldn't pay those prices for a Sindt.

At the same time I don't feel any outrage when I see good instruments listed for prices higher than the current "going rate". It's not my business.

It does concern me when I see people bidding on Ebay for Pakistani instruments. Whatever price they pay it's too much because the instrument they receive is worthless.

While for a Sindt whatever price they pay, low or high, the instrument they receive is excellent.

I got a Sindt one-head-three-bodies set for $300 here, and I thought I was getting my money's worth.

I myself owned D's by Killarney and Sindt, and I kept the Killarney and sold the Sindt. (Say it ain't so!)

"you cannot buy Sindt whistles in shops, only through him directly - making these whistles nearly impossible to get hold of"

So that means that any instrument made by a single individual is nearly impossible to get a hold of. I'll have to remember this line next time I'm trying to sell an instrument

The real selling point is the waiting list is about 3 years (so I was told when I ordered one direct from Mr. Sindt). I've got about 18 months to go on a new one (I hope).

If he really is no longer taking orders that would push the price up, but yeah, this guy's starting bid is way too high.

I've played both, and a Killarney is nowhere near a Sindt clone. At least the one's I've tried, I can put way more air into a Sindt and really lean into it, giving it a greater dynamic range and more room for expression. I couldn't get along with the Killarney I had since it required a very delicate touch, but I gave it to a friend who loves it. Horses for courses.

There is another fancy whistle on eBay UK.

Sweetheart Killourhy whistle in D

I like the look of it, but at £545 there is no way I could afford it.

Tell us something.: I've been trying to learn the recorder for about 5 years now and want to add a new instrument (tin whistle) to my repertoire. I hope with only 6 holes life will be a bit easier... (John Sheahan's Marino Casino in the Gaiety theatre has something to do with it - whereas my head knows that 40 years of practice is the reason why it sounds so good, I'm still hoping...)

Well, every item is worth exactly as much as somebody is willing to pay for it... I've seen similar craziness with spinning wheels, and I dare say that in both cases there's no objective reason to pay a fortune for a tool that does its job just as well in a much cheaper version. Btw, my favourite whistle is still my Clark Sweetone for € 6,80, postage included...

In the uilleann pipe world that's pretty much the norm: the best makers have a long wait list or have closed their books.

It's why I usually buy used instruments: no wait, no closed books.

My sample size was just one Sindt D and one Killarney D so "your mileage may vary" but with the two I had the differences were subtle.

On the plus side for the Sindt, it a slightly darker and more sophisticated tone, and slightly smoother voicing over the range.

On the plus side for the Killarney it had a slightly sweeter and easier 2nd octave giving it a more nimble action (or more flexibility) and it had more accurate octave tuning. (It's 2nd octave is even easier than my vintage Feadog, which had been the sweetest high D I'd tried.)

On the negative side for the Killarney there was a very subtle metallic undertone or hiss (to me nearly inaudible) on the lower notes of the 2nd octave.

In the end, the Sindt D had a slightly stiffer and flatter 2nd octave than either my Killarney D or my vintage Feadog D, and the Sindt A/Bb/B set had a slightly flatter and stiffer 2nd octave than my Freeman Generation A/Bb/B set. (This is a home-made set, a Freeman Generation Bb head that I use with self-made A and B bodies and a Generation Bb body.)
