Short list of recommended recordings?
I got bit hard by the whistle bug just a week ago and ordered a bunch of the cheapies to try and compare, along with some of the recommended instructional materials. I want to find some recommendations as to who to listen to in order to internalize the sounds of the instrument. There's the comprehensive "Whistle Recordings" list which is a fantastic thing to have, but I'm looking for the highly condensed version.
So far I'm listening to Mary Bergin, and Joanie Madden. Looking for recommendations on 4-6 other musicians and specific albums/recordings that feature the whistle prominently, and that are available either on Spotify or as reasonably priced CDs. And while I love the Irish stuff, it'd be great to get some suggestions from other celtic and non-celtic genres.
Thanks!
Jack

Anything by Micho Russell. The double album Rarities & Old Favorites 1949–1993: Tin Whistle, Flute & Songs from North Clare & Beyond is the best bang for the buck.JackJ wrote:Looking for recommendations on 4-6 other musicians and specific albums/recordings that feature the whistle prominently, and that are available either on Spotify or as reasonably priced CDs.

Re: Short list of recommended recordings?
In addition to Micho Russell and the Paddy Moloney/Sean Potts - Tin Whistles album listed above, I highly recommend:
Donncha Ó Briain - Ceol ar an bhFeadóg Stáin
Sean Ryan - Minstrels Fancy
Both are on Spotify and I believe iTunes as well.

Some great suggestions--I've been able to get many of them via streaming, and I'm ordering CDs on a few others. Thanks for the tips!

Re: Short list of recommended recordings?
Try Micho Russell, Doncha O'Briain, Sean Potts, and Sean Ryan. For low whistle, try Davey Spillane.

- Tell us something.: I've been playing whistles since 2010. I love how varied whistles are in their design, construction, tone, and handling. Though I've largely settled on what I enjoy playing, I'm still a sucker for an interesting new design.

Definitely listen to the pure tradition stuff, for grounding, but if you want a bit more variety, here are my very favorite albums:
Brian Finnegan's "The Ravishing Genius of Bones" (Soprano D Whistles, Alto A whistles, and Flutes)

"Dual" by Julie Fowlis and Muireann nic Amhlaoibh (Lots of vocals, but some fantastic whistle duets)

"Open the Door for Three" by Realta (Uilleann Pipes and Low Whistles)

Re: Short list of recommended recordings?
A short list? Probably not.
To the earlier suggestions, I'd like to add Lawrence O'Hearn (https://open.spotify.com/artist/19VRqq6 ... -QHfAzexZw) and Brian Hughes. (Spotify conflates two different artists on the Brian Hughes artist page. See https://open.spotify.com/album/2dNKOthf ... Sorry guys - There's no way I deliberately sent the same reply 3 times - within the same minute, as it would appear. Absolutely no idea how that happened. Answers on a postcard, please to..............................
