Song That Can Be an Air and a Reel or Jig

Post by Aldwyn »

Hey folks!

I really love the way it sounds when a piper goes from an air to a jig in the same tune.

With that in mind, I am looking for a fairly easy tune (I am a newbie... only playing since Feb) which can be played both as an air as well as a jig or reel. My target is, the same song that sounds good slow, and can then played double or triple time for the jig/reel part and also sound good.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

There's many tunes existing both as a reel or a jig, but I never noticed one with a slow air version.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Great suggestions! Especially O'er the Water to Charlie. I'm going to learn that, as an air/jig combo.

I enjoyed listening to The Blackbird again - haven't heard that for ages. These days - I expect it's age - everything by The Bothy Band sounds very fast to me - the air, set dance and reel all sounded fast. Lovely stuff though, and I think they were breaking ground and making a point at the time they did these things.

An Páistín Fionn has multiple slow air / hornpipe / jig versions including the jig usually known as 'Statia Donnelly'

It was a bit too early this morning when I wrote down my answer: There' the Willie Clancy "purty Molly Brannigan-green fields of America".

I posted a while back about a forgotten air version of 'Kitty's Rambles to Youghal" called "The Heart of my Kitty":

They'd work well if you transposed the air version into D minor and then followed it with the jig (usually D mixolydian these days, though D minor in O'Farrell).

Pretty Maid Milking the Cow - Harry Bradley turned this into a mazurka. It also works as a slip jig (I turned it into one anyway)
