Slow Air recommendations

My favourite is Cuimhne an Phiobaire, on Chieftains 7 under No.6 The Coombe. A Sean Potts composition, so it's not ancient, but for me it's a knockout.

Good to know the name of it, I'd always just called it "The Coombe".

I'd not thought much about that tune until somebody asked me to play it at a funeral, so I had to learn it. Now it's a favourite.

Being a Highland piper, there are loads of Scottish Gaelic airs that we play on the Highland pipes.

On the uilleann pipes there's an air from my native Appalachia that suits the instrument very well, seems to me

I will spend the rest of my life trying to learn to play that tune well. I thought about playing it at my father's funeral, and in the end didn't. I like your version; nicely done.

Another one for me is Amhrán Na Leabhar.... Song of the Books, or maybe Lament for the Books; though maybe there is a difference between slow airs and laments. What the heck; throwing it in there.

tangent notice; my daughter (16) is in a music mentorship program here in Cape Breton (fiddler).... part of it is a mentorship day once a month with a tutor in your discipline. Saturday was mentor day; so she is playing in her small fiddle group, and the instructor says...'you know, that's a good tune for funerals. Claire: you'll be playing funerals before you know it. You'll need to remember this one.' Claire heard her first live Cape Breton fiddler at a memorial service when she was a few weeks old, hanging off my neck.... I had made the box, and the scoop with which we scattered the ashes, for the gentleman who had passed on, and the fiddler that day has been her teacher since she was five. Thought a lot about life, and death, around that time.

Since you don't mind half-holing the f-naturals in Cuimhne An Phíobaire, you might also like "The Green Fields of Canada", another beautiful air that uses the F natural to great effect (and a personal favorite of mine).

Yeah, i love that tune also, need to get back to it.
