Fluthier

Post by Casey Burns »

When people ask me what I do for a living I usually say I make musical instruments. When they ask "Are you a luthier?" I can't really say I am as that definition seems to only refer to stringed instruments, derived from the root word for "Lute". I then mention I am a maker of wind instruments, mostly flutes for Irish music.

But what would people thing about the term "Fluthier" as a term for a wind instrument maker? I am not the first person to think of this apparently, according to a Google search.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Terrible. I'd just say 'flute maker' or 'I make flutes and [whatever else]'.
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.

Yes, what's the big deal? I'd think you'll save more time saying this rather than having to explain what a "fluthier" is supposed to be (if that's your concern).

Sounds very much to me like that dreaded syndrome all flute maker's go through if they are in the business long enough.....usually striking in or around the 34th year of operation...........known in psychology circles as F.M.C.I.C. .....or it's layman's, full, more common description - " Flute Maker's Career Identity Crisis. " As evidence for this phenomenon I would like to quote Casey Burns,

:) " 33+ Years as a Flute Maker! " :)

Not having had any caffeine today and it still being somewhat early on a Monday morning, I tend to agree. I think I'll stick to "maker of black holes by the foot".
